Anyone have any good advice, good deals, good/bad experiences with cross country moving? Looking to move a household from west coast to east coast sometime the end of June or into July.

If you are looking to keep the price down (which I assume you are since you are a Spoofee member) make sure you have everything packed. They charge for boxes, packing material, blankets and even tape they use on boxes. If they think your box isnt secure enough they will tape it.

Dont be afraid to check over the paper work after they are done - every item should have a sticker that is recorded. The guys we used were super fast like they were in a hurry, but they were good. Only one thing got broke on the trek from NY to FL and it was a box that I packed. I did find out after the fact that the guy who packed Kadin's crib cut the strings on the little kicking piano thing that was tied to his crib rails instead of untying them.....

They did misplace our dog's kennel and my hubby's toolbox, but they checked the warehouse and found it. So over all it was a good experience. And I tell ya, it was a whole lot easier driving down with Kadin (who was just over a year) and 2 dogs!

Good luck with the move!

Thanks Kma! The last time I moved I packed and they loaded and drove. I'm looking into packing and loading myself this time and then them moving it. UBF has a service similiar to PODS and they seem to be the cheapest so far. The trouble will be all in the timing issues. It isn't my home (well it belongs to me now) but I'm flying out and packing it up and have everything I want to keep shipped here. My husband won't be able to come with me and I'll have the boys with me. Lucky for me I've moved over 20 times in my life and I've gotten pretty good. But this will only be the second time I've had to use a mover. I thought about driving a truck across country myself, but when I figured up gas and hotels...it wasn't a big enought savings to be worth it.

I found a website that will send me multiple company quotes, but I still wondered if my fellow spoofers had any good advice about who to use or not to use.

You're not moving into the NJ/NY area are you???

Not that I would mind, but we do have a "Prospective Resident" questionaire that you have to fill out and we have to approve.

I didn't see one with you name on it yet, so you had better get cracking and get it filed.

I would hate to be the one to delay your move.

I have never moved so I'm not lessoned in this, but how about "pods" or "pack rats" where you pack the stuff yourself and they come and move it.

How are those companies?

I wouldn't move to Jersey again even for a good drinking buddy! Been there done that..born there! I'm in Erie PA and moving the contents of my father's home in Carlsbad CA to here.

:noidea: I don't know. That's what I'm looking into. They're the most resonable. Anybody here have any experience with them?

...anybody wanna come help me pack????

I just though about what I wrote and wanted to make sure nobody took it the wrong way and got offended...

There's nothing wrong with New Jersey, it just so happens I've made a lot of trips there in the past few years and everytime something goes wrong, or the trip has been for a funeral or sickness...bad luck and bad memories.

Plus I really do hate jughandles.

......but I like that they pump your gas for you! :)

I though you only drink Makers Mark? You help, I'll have whatever you want to drink!

Come along! Everyone's welcome!

BTW if anyone ever uses one of those websites that offer free quotes from multiple companies-be prepared! I'm glad I did because it would have been a lot of phone calls on my own. But I'll be I got 6 phone calls just within an hour! I finally put a message on my machine asking them to email the quote (yes I used my "alternate" email). There were even more emails w/quotes from companies who didn't call just emailed. Now I've got to sort through them and they really vary a lot, by as much as 2-3 thousand dollars! Some are well known companies, some I've never heard of. Now I'm really confused! I'm not going w/the cheapest, or the most expensive but other than that I'm having a hard time. When I get a second I'll post some of the names and see if anyone here's heard or had any experience w/them.

OK...anyone have any good/bad experiences with the following companies? Any preference as to pay by weight vs. pay by sq. ft.?

Northwestern Van Lines, Allied VanLines, Expediant Van Lines?
