Strangely I ordered this exact drive from Newegg last weekend ... It just arived today, and I just insatlled it ... works like a charm! I haven't tested it on Dual Layer media yet however because of the extremely high prices of such media. Just so everyone knows though this is a DRIVE ONLY deal, so hopefully you already have a Decoder and burning software.

If your looking for software for it see my post about Nero 6 Ultra .... great software!

PS --- Dont overlook the fact that Newegg will give you 5 free blank DVDs when you buy this drive ... gotta love Newegg!

A decoder is software that will work with the drive to allow you to view movies. Without it, you will just see a bunch of garbled data. (Just got this off the Web: "A hardware or software system that translates data streams into video or audio information.")

Hi..From your DVD post can you tell me what is a decoder and why you would need one. ok..thanks..

Sure,

In short a decoder is what allows you to actually watch DVD movies on your computer. Without a decoder you can use data DVDs but you cant watch DVD movies. There are two types of decoders (hardware, and software) ... Hardware decoders are rare, but are included on some premium video cards. The much more common form of decoder is a software decoder. These are included with programs such as WinDVD or PowerDVD. Programs such as Windows Media Player can play DVDs also, but not until after you've installed a decoder.

Heres a link with more information, as well as a list of popular decoders:

I'm really not much of a techie, but I could probably swap this out with my cd burner...right? Would I need additional cables. Also, how would it work with an Athlon 750mhz system? I did upgrade to a 120gb hd a few months back (a spoofee deal of the day!).

Thanks

p.s. I have Ultra for burning, but have yet to use it...no burner.

You should be fine to switch it out without any additional cables ... if you are replacing an older cd drive with this drive all you should have to do is disconnect all the cables (power, IDE, and possiably CD-Audio) make sure that the jumper (little pin that connects two wires) on your new drive is set to the same setting (Master, Slave, or Cable Select) as your old drive and then plug the old cables into the new drive and your ready to go.

If only the prices on the 8.5 gig dvd medias go lower more I'd buy this in a flash!! Sigh.

the 8 gig media won't do you any good unless you need really big storage disc and 4 gig should be good enough. Since those 4 gig media are cheap now I don't see why not to get one. I been burning games for my ps2 and it works fine

I read some reviews that said that the Pioneer 108DVR is better.
+The Pioneer can burn 8x RiData DVD-Rs at 12x

I have an NEC ND-1300A that I got for $33 shipped about six months ago, 4x multi-format and it works for what I need it for and I don't have any complaints yet. I'd recommend NEC.
