I need a free virus program that is fairly small. I don't have much room on my harddrive and AVG and Avast a little larger than I want. Does anyone know of a smaller one that still works well?

do you mean an ANTI-virus? Your title suggests otherwise, and I could recommend a few

 I was thinking the same thing.

I know if you search the threads, other people have requested the same info before.
I wish you the best of luck, it is tough when you don't have space for a nice program.

:noidea: I hope one of these might help you if you read through them.

The only problem with ClamAV is that it doesn't do real-time scans and you have to manually force (or schedule) a scan. So if your kids download something to the hard drive, it won't get scanned until you make ClamAV scan. (This is something the ClamAV team is working on, but they still don't have it ready yet.)

TrendMicro has an online one that shouldn't require a download.

I guess that's the price of small.

I use avast on my other computers and I like it. I guess the problem is solved because I can't get any windows OS to work on this one anymore and have to go with linux. I just don't understand linux.

It just takes getting used to. Getting used to it also depends on what distribution you use and what desktop it defaults to. The desktop called KDE is more like Windows. Some people (like me) find this is easier to adjust to. The only gripes I ever had with with MS Windows was the cost and for the cost it should work better ALL the time. I get different but probably the same amount of problems with Linux because I tinker but for the cost (it's free) that's a really great deal.

this is very interesting i did not know there were free anti-virus site
thanks:)

If you are using Ubuntu, you can click the Applications button and then click Add/Remove. At the top, you'll need to click the drop-down box by the Show text and choose 'All Available Applications'. In the search box, type Virus and hit the Enter key on the keyboard. There will be one called Virus Scanner which you can download for free.

I'm using puppy linux because of the size of the computer, very small. I haven't been able to figure out how to download and install anything. I tried to install firefox and can't get it to run. Windows is much easier to figure out. I'm waiting on a dos boot CD so I can reformat the hard drive and then I'll probably reinstall a smaller windows OS.
Thanks everyone for the input.

You might want to try PCLinuxOS MiniMe Edition http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=04694
I'm pretty sure it will have Firefox as default.

my favorite site for free downloads is downloads.com it's legit, no virus/spam some of the programs are FREE forever, some are trials. I just uninstall / reinstall the paid ones after the trial is over. can't u delete some things to make room for a good program? you can send them to yourself on email (store them in cyberspace) or burn to cd, or even keep them on a flash-drive....if you have a virus, remember to virus-scan the files before you put them back onto your computer

I used to use nonags.com for all my freeware. The best part being no nag screens for the software they offer.

I love that this thread is still going even after the RP was finished.

By the way, if you want to ensure your anti-virus program is working, then download the anti-virus test file from eicar. This file is not malicious in anyway. Your anti-virus program should notify you of the file and offer to clean it, quarantine it, or do one of the above automatically.

Download various formats of the file from here: Link
