Hey all,

Where I work at the computer store, we've had some problems with several hard drives going out at once on different computers. The problem is when a user tries to boot, they get a nice message telling them that their computer wasn't shut down properly last time (possibly due to power failure) and that they have the option to boot into Safe Mode. It doesn't matter what mode they choose (Safe, Last Known Good Config, Normal, etc.) the computer reboots about 10 seconds into the Windows logo screen.

Now what is weird is that I have had at least 6 computers come in the past week with this issue. All are running Win XP (either home or Pro), but the hard drives have all been different -- Maxtor or Western Digital -- SATA or ATA.

I can run the hard drive diagnostics tools from the various vendors and some of the issues are solved, but some data tends to be lost from the shutdown.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

It is strange. I have not heard about that one before.

I repaired an HP laptop with this problem about two weeks ago. The owner said it happened after Norton had appeared with a warning (she didn't recall what it said). The only way I was able to make it stop was to reformat. I thought the hard drive was bad, but it is working fine. Also it was XP Home edition.

Similar Problem with Dell laptop with WinXP Professional

I had a very similar problem just yesterday with my Dell laptop with WinXP Professional Edition. The error message was something like "Unmountable disk".

The problem seems to be the automatic updates from Microsoft trying to install Windows XP SP2 installation updates since it happens right after Windows asked me to restart with this patch.

I had to use the recovery point for WinXP to recover the system state from the previous day. Then everything was back to nominal.

You can go to the Windows recovery point by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 on most WinXP systems. There should be an option to choose for recovery point.

Damn Microsoft WinXP SP2.

This is where I am starting to lean towards. Just had another computer come in this morning after a patch had been downloaded to the system. All of the sytems have also had some type of spyware on them as well, and once that is gone, the SP2 install seems to work correctly. Hmm...I'll post more as I get more computers in and see a trend.
