I have a crazy noisy fan, that i tried to take out of the card, but it just doesn't comes off. instead the screws begin to shred a little, so i stopped.

any ideas??

Hmm, I replaced the fan on my GeForce 3 card a while ago, I can't remember what I did though. I think mine was screwed onto a green plastic platform, so I removed the screws of the fan, and then popped the pushpins out and the base of the fan came out. I then replaced it with a Thermaltake Crystal Orb fan off eBay. That card is now in my other machine though, thank heaven for my new Mac. :D

I don't have any green plastic, its just screwed onto the heat sink which has holes for the screws, and its screwed so hard that its impossible to get it out.

and this thing is sooooo loud

I'm an ATI guy, but have you tried different size screwdrivers? If removing the fan is a fault, remove the whole hsf unit and replace it with something off the shelf.. They make numerous aftermarket stuff for NVidia stuff..

Another option, is you can try to disassemble the fan while it's still attached. Remove the sticker that sits in the center of the fan blades, and pry off the retaining clip. It should come apart and you can clean the inside surfaces and get at the bearings with a drop of lightweight oil.

i tried all types of screwdrivers, i even tried removing the fan with heatsink altogether, but couldn't.

what do you mean by hsf?

The fan doesn't have a sticker or a retaining clip, i actually wanted to put the oil in it as you said, but it has no option, :cry:that's why i was thinking of how to remove it safely without damaging the card.

anything else? i mean any other trick comes to your mind?

HSF = HeatSink Fan.. It's a Combo deal, but refered to as just the acronym.

The entire thing has to come off some way. Either by retaining push pins that you take needlenose pliers to the back of, carefully I may add. Screws. And others use Adhesive compound. If you see NO attachment anchors anywhere, then it's probably glued to the chip. If that's the case, get the card warm by running the system, maybe playing a game then promptly shutdown the system and pull the card. **Carefully** try to Twist the heatsink off while your pulling up a lil.. It should break free..

Now a legal note: the above is only my suggestions, it's your hardware, not mine. I take no responsibilty if it breaks..

The general way however that hsf's are put on is with mounting clips or pushpins.. Tho I've known cards that do it this way to 'save money'...

Another thing you could try, if the screwheads aren't rounded off yet, take a mini blow torch to the screws and then try backing them out. Please note: torches are dangerous, you can burn yourself, you can also torch your card, so be very carefull if you attempt this.

Outside of that, I can't think of anything else to try.. Outside of smashing the card to bits and giving yourself an excuse to buy a new one.. lol
