Nokia 770 Mobile Internet Tablet for $176.85 Shipped

Buy.com and woot had this for around $130 not too long ago, so this isn't an outstanding deal, but not bad. The 770 is the older model, the 800 is the newer model. You can get the 800 for around $228 shipped from buy.com or $236 shipped from amazon.com.

I have the 770 and use it for checking e-mail, web browsing, etc, and it's pretty good for what it does. It's a nice, convenient way to have many PC functions available without having to turn on your PC. Works great over my wi-fi 802.11g connection. There's also lots of free software out there for it. Let me know if anyone wants more info or has any questions.

All of the above run Linux and you can freely develop for them too!

True. Nokia even has its own site where they walk you through porting apps, how to set up the SDK properly to emulate the system, etc.

I'd get it if it was at buy.com... I have a credit there that Im dying to use.

no deal on 770

Do not buy the 770 or 800 unless you are linux savvy or have working applications for it. If you need it only for internet and simple mail then that's fine. Don't count on video streaming. Also, you may have to update the OS.
Go with the 810 for now or wait till prices drop.

There are a few programs out there that will do video streaming, but none of them are terribly straightforward. UKtube I believe is one of the best for streaming youtube vids.

Right now I have my PC set up to stream video and MP3s using the very basic Windows Media Connect. I convert any videos I want to watch using Media Coder. It's a bit of a procedure, but I've got every episode of the office converted and store them on my PC, and can just whip out the 770 and watch them from anywhere in the house. Kinda fun. If anyone wants details on how to do it, let me know, it's relatively simple.

I think the biggest benefit of the 770 (and the 800) is in the wireless connection and the simplicity. If you want to do basic email and web browsing, it's really convenient, and with a bit of effort, you can tweak it to do a lot more.
