would I be able to use this dvd recorder to copy a movie that I bought at the store? I have a plextor cd-rw burner installed on my computer now but its not reading dvd's since im assuming its only meant for cd's. By buying the sony dvd burner is there I way I can copy this dvd movie?

Copying dvd movies is wrong and against the law. It is copyright infringement. By copying movies, actors don't get the $20 million a movie they demand. That is just not fair to them.

:)

However, you could use this fantastic drive to BACKUP any DVD you may come across. ;)

thats the exact reason I would be using it for (backup). Would I need another dvd drive in order to be able to use this Sony dvd drive to backup a dvd?

im reading the rebate form, and it states it is not valid for refurbished models

The Rebate coupon says the unit must be purchased between 12/23/04 and 1/1/05.

It's good 12/23/2003 through 1/1/2005

Wow, I was about to order one of these, thank heaven I couldn't get the 10% off coupon to work. Spoofee, you almost made us make a fatal mistake. I'll mark this as necessary.

4x -r

8x +r, its probably a Liteon, Sony hasnt made these things since their 510.

erik, fix this on the homepage too, as it still looks valid when you look at it from the homepage.

I don't have access to the homepage. I'll forward this to Spoofee though ASAP. I didn't realize it was on the frontpage as well.

I apologize for the mistake. I made the change.

Angelo921 - You could backup a DVD with one drive by making an image of it on your harddrive first. BUT, most movies you rent or buy will be over 8GB, so you would need a dual layer burner to get the full DVD to burn. Otherwise you'll need to use DVD Shrink (or something similar) to reauthor the DVD into a 4GB format. Keep in mind that you are only legally allowed to backup movies you own, so what you decide to do with it is your responsibility. :hmm:

you save a very small amount of cash by pirating dvds. yes, its illegal as everyone knows, but when you see "DVD burner" you have to admit that you think about copying them.
anyway, to copy commercial dvds you need a dual layer dvd burner (only a very few commercial dvds are below 4.7gb, which means you'll need dual layer dvds for most dvd copies), dual layer blank dvds (which i just found at $9.99 a piece, although i'm sure there's cheaper ones), and then factor in the rental charges if you're renting them. pretty expensive...
it's not like burning cds where you pay $0.10/blank cd, $30 burner, and then download the music. so, although it is possible, dvd copying isn't exactly perfect yet.

also, just wanted to say that spoofee rocks. i don't know of any other website that you have easy access to talk to the administrators. keep up the good work guys!

I need one of those for my laptop!

8gb DVD's fit on a regular DVD-R or DVD+R media thanks to DVD Shrink, which is a free software. I use it to shrink all my backups on a regular single layer DVD. I bought a 50 pack of DVD-R media for $20.

Thats what DVDShrink is for :D

You lose a little quality that is hardly noticable, but its well worth it in the long run!

Yeah, I backup my DVDs using DVD Shrink and I'm always happy with the results. Most of the time I can't even tell it's a backup unless I decide to keep all of my special features.

In my cart, the 10% off coupon drops the price to $62.99, and it's $71.64 with tax and shipping. Do you guys still think this deal is worthy of bearing the name spoofee? I could use an external burner for my lappy, but if I'd be better off waiting...
:hmm:
