PETA's New "Save The Whales" Billboard Takes Aim At Fat Women
PETA's new billboard campaign in Florida is raising eyebrows and ire ... billboard reminded me of a recent Onion News Network send up of PETA's sexist tactics. ...

STORY AND PIC OF THE BILLBOARD:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/17/petas-new-save-the-whales_n_261134.html

PETA's new billboard campaign in Florida is raising eyebrows and ire among women and health groups. A drawing on billboards in Jacksonville depicts an obese woman with the phrase, "Save The Whales, Lose The Blubber: Go Vegetarian."

In a press release, PETA stated:

A new PETA billboard campaign that was just launched in Jacksonville reminds people who are struggling to lose weight -- and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball -- that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini. [....]

Anyone wishing to achieve a hot "beach bod" is reminded that studies show that vegetarians are, on average, about 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters. [...]

"Trying to hide your thunder thighs and balloon belly is no day at the beach," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "PETA has a free 'Vegetarian Starter Kit' for people who want to lose pounds while eating as much as they like.

Jessica at Feministing blasts the billboard as "fat-shaming" and that "PETA owes the residents of Jacksonville a serious apology."

Holly at Deceiver states, "This is exactly what you would expect [from PETA] -- no empathy for humans whatsoever, just a lot of B.S. about how vegetarianism will make fat people just a little bit less of a blight on humanity."

PETA is known for its attention-grabbing tactics involving scantily clad-women, like this veggie dog eat-in on Capitol Hill that involved playboy playmates wearing only lettuce bikinis.

When asked to comment on the charges that the ad is sexist and mocking of overweight people, Ashley Byrne, a senior campaigner for PETA stated, "Our goal is help overweight Jacksonville residents - the best way to do that is to go vegetarian. We're not trying to insult anyone. [....] Vegetarians look and feel better than meat eaters. This is a life-saving message."

When asked specifically if the billboard shames overweight people, Byrne stated, "If the billboard is shocking, hopefully it will gets people's attention, and help them improve quality of life for themselves and their families.... it's designed to help people."

This latest billboard reminded me of a recent Onion News Network send up of PETA's sexist tactics.

It's stuff like this from PETA and the society that has young girls and women dying of anorexia and bulemia because they think they have to be skinny to be beautiful.

Dying from anorexia and bulemia: 0.01% of weight-related deaths
Dying from obesity-related complications: 99.99% of weight related deaths.

And yes, you gotta be reasonably skinny (aka be in good shape) to be beautiful. And no, you don't need to save the whales. You need the whales to loose their blubber to save themselves. :argh:

First of all I am a size 14 which has always been the average size of a woman until the last 20.

Second, I eat healthy. I just think the freakin government needs to butt out of our lives. We have soldiers fighting and dying for our freedom. Freedom of what? We can't eat, we can't smoke we can't punish our kids, we can't say what we want.

As for the obesity crap being 99% of deaths, I am sorry but that's crap. With all the drug over doses, suicides, wreckless driving etc I highly doubt US FAT PEOPLE ARE DOING ANY HARM.

My sister works in a nursing home with alot of skinny nurses. Those nurses have told her they hate fat people and can't stand fat people. Basicially those stupid girls are afraid of gaining weight. It's their problem not ours.

There have also been studies that have showed that people who are skinny or underweight are not necessarily healthy. So, no excuses.

We have hate crimes for everything else so we might as well call this billboard a hate crime.

People need to quit concerning themselves with what people eat and what they look like and get a freakin real life.

whoa.....ask your sister to ask one of those nurses to give you a chill pill....soldiers dying? WTF? what does that have anything to do with fat whales? One can be fat and smoke and do drugs are whatever the kvetch one may want, just don't expect the health system to pay for that person's "freedom of choice" Wanna be a fat pig with SELF-INFLICTED diabetes - no healthcare for that person! Those nurses are right.

I stand my ground.

P.S. I said WEIGHT-related deaths, not overall mortality.

There is a big problem in the U.S. from health complications from being overweight. My mother had high blood pressure and diabetes for many, many years....she happen to be overweight at the time. When she finally lost most of that weight, her blood pressure came down to "normal " and her diabetes 'went away'.....:noidea: From years of being a diabetic she had damage to her eyes, her kidneys and her heart....and more I'm sure. Yes, it was from years of being overweight and the health issues and complications that it caused that ultimately put her in her grave. An early one at that, 67.

Gr8's 99.99% is a bit high IMO, but that number is still significantly higher than a 'skinny person's', bulimic's and anorexic's health issues combined.

No one said we all must be skinny, but just a healthy weight. Being obese, is just not healthy...anyone who tells you differently, is just in denial.

I just looked up statistics on deaths and mortality in the us.. no where did i see anything about "Fatness" causing death.

My husband is freaking skinny and I think he needs to gain weight. H9is whole family was skinny and died from heart disease and cancer.

My great grandma struggled with her weight her whole life but I never thought she was obese and she was the greatest person alive.

My sister is a little over weight and she is the nicest person you could ever meet.

It's funny how alot of great looking skinny people can be so hateful and ordinary people or people who are not perfect are the ones who are loving or giving.

ANYWAYS here's the stats

Deaths and Mortality
(Data are for the U.S.)

•Number of deaths: 2,426,264
•Death rate: 810.4 deaths per 100,000 population
•Life expectancy: 77. 7years
•Infant Mortality rate: 6.69 deaths per 1,000 live births
Number of deaths for leading causes of death:
•Heart disease: 631,636
•Cancer: 559,888
•Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 137,119
•Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 124,583
•Accidents (unintentional injuries): 121,599
•Diabetes: 72,449
•Alzheimer's disease: 72,432
•Influenza and Pneumonia: 56,326
•Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 45,344
•Septicemia: 34,234

I am done with this conversation. I don't consider myself obese. And actually I was too skinny, boney before I had kids and people said it made me look sick. AND now that I have gained wieght america considers it as being too fat?? I am the same size as Marlynn Monroe and Judy Garland.

But now if you are over a size 10 people think you are obese. That's crazy and that's why so many women are taking diet pills and starving themselves and have low self esteem..

yea, whatever she said!

and once again, I said 99.99% of WEIGHT-related deaths. Meaning, that if you take 10000 people who die of weight-related complications, only 1 will be due to LOW weight and not high. Statistics anyone?

heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis are ALL related to obesity, maybe even septicemia. All have been linked, not necessarily the only cause, but DEFINITELY proven. Stop arguing with the expert. No health care for fat whales, yo hear me Obama?!

No one here call you fat, nor did we say there was a correlation between fat people not being nice people. I know lots of fat nasty people and nice skinny people and visa versa. :noidea:

If someone is carrying around an extra 10 or so pounds....no 'big deal'....if they are carrying around an extra 40+ pounds, they should be very concerned....

Wow. I haven't lurked in on Spoofee enough. I skimmed over this hot topic after telling myself I WAS NOT going to spend any time writing to Spoofee.

If I may - relax creddy, size 14 is big not fat. The lady on the billboard (btw I think PETA is koo-koo) is about an 18. She's fat.
As far as your husband goes, be glad he's skinny. When was the last time you saw an old fat person? Women tend to outlive men and since there are very very few octogenarians who are fat (my 60 yrs of observation is that fat people don't live to be old), you have a better chance of growing old together. I'm working on the weight differential between my wife and I myself and hope we go into our 90s together and she doesn't have to be by herself.
Lastly, it doesn't matter how many carrots you eat if you eat them along side ice cream.
You can knock off gluten and sugar to lose weight but it's not "fun". Personally, I'd rather have a long life and physical satisfaction then a a short fix of oral pleasure that amounts to taste-addiction.

Yeah, Overweight people are here just to cost you ppl money and they enjoy being Fat...just ask the next fat person you meet..."why are you fat, do you want to die young, why are you costing people money, do you know that you could have more health problems by being overweight?"

DONT ask if they have a physical or mental illness that might have caused them to be in the condition they are in...

just ass-ume they are fat cause its FUN...

since being fat is one of the last things left that is acceptable to be openly discriminate about, do you really think anyone would WANT to be fat?

I'm pissed at the responses about this...its just sad people are so closed minded...get to know people before you judge them

no just clump them all into one big dirt pile because they dont fit in your mold of what is right and wrong...

:mmph:

There are many reasons why a person can be overweight......however, none of them change the fact that being overweight is unhealthy.

Telling a size 18 or 20 person that they are perfectly fine and healthy is just lying to them and enabling them.

Sometimes the problem is psychological, sometimes physical and sometimes just plain poor eating habits along with a sedentary lifestyle, etc. The bottom line is, it's still unhealthy, irregardless of the cause.

Is there discrimination against fat people? You bet....just like there's discrimination against skinny people, just read above to see all the negativity toward them too.

aaaand while we are on the subject....why is there so many problems with women being fat but very few comments on MEN being fat???

Preco, again...its like any discrimination over the last 10000 years...do you really REALLY believe anyone WANTS to be overweight??
or a smoker?
or a drug addict?
or an alcoholic?

its easy to say...just stop...when you dont have a problem that is considered unacceptable...

ohhhh I have so much to say here but I digress...you see it your way and i see it mine...I will tell my fat friends and my plump self to stop eating...everything will be okay then.....

Please show me where I said to tell a fat person to just stop eating?

I said it was unhealthy. period.

Obviously the underlying problem needs to be addressed, BTDT with my mother and then some, but I'm not going to lie to anyone and tell them that being overweight is healthy. It just isn't and that's a fact. Like it or not.

there is very little you do in a day that is healthy....stop breathing, don't start your car, dont shop at a grocery store, don't use your microwave, or your cell phone....

people are different and GENES are different....some ppl are predisposed to be slim and others are not...I have never been skinny, hate me for it...don't care...

Reality is, being overweight is unhealthy. Trying to justify being unhealthy because of one's weight by bringing in all other risk factors in an unhealthy life will still not make being overweight healthy. It still doesn't change fact.

Now, if you can identify what areas of your life are unhealthy and which risk factors you can control.......and actually try to eliminate those risk factors.....you stand to live a healthier and longer life. :yesnod:

But that won't happen until the person stops making excuses and actually becomes proactive with their own health concerns, and being overweight is a health concern.

:talktohand:your right...you win....its all just so easy....thats why there is such a huge overweight problem in this country....what are ppl thinking???:thefinger:

:drama:

:bored:

(I must be having a nightmare -- I find myself agreeing substantially with gr8nrg. Please, someone wake me up.) ;)
