I purchased one of these drives when they 1st came out. I have been very happy with it. It did die right before the warranty ran out and they shipped me another one. I was doing a lot of burning so I'm sure I got my money's worth out of it. Of course when I bought it the price was around $250. One nice feature is that the drive will burn 4X DVD+R media at 8X reliably.

why not when i can get dual layer for $89 w/ software?

From a proud owner of 'original' Plextor drives (read: scsi), the quality is top notch, or it used to be.. But I'm with vile10.. If I was gonna spend $100, I'd rather get NEC's Dual Layer drive..

Dual layer? Did you mean dual format? There is a huge difference here. I was not aware of dual layer DVD writers available yet.

No he means dual layer. There are a few dual layer burners available out there, plus many hacks for previous burners that convert it into a dual layer burner (which I don't suggest) Costs are so low right now with the new wave of 12x burners coming out, that you can get one really cheap. I spent $200 on my brand spanking new Plextor 708a drive less than a year ago! Now look, Its on spoofee as a hot deal!!

Interesting. Now show me a dual layer DVD burner for $100. I bet the media is very inexpsnsive as well. ;)

Here's how I look @ DVD Burners ATM... 8x media isn't the easiest thing to get ahold of, 4x media is getting cheaper and now that 12x burners are on the forefront, 8x media will eventually come down in price and up in availability. The key tho to remember is the same paradox as with CD Burners.. Once that speed limit is reached, it's a matter of triviling over seconds.. But more importantly with DVD Burners is I think 16x will be the realistic max which would be 5min burns.. The key to that is however a downfall of HD's.. I think you'd be hard pressed to burn an entire dvd @ 16x and 'not' have underrun protection kick in at least once, probably several times. Reason? Ever tried copying 4.5GB from one HD to another? Takes alot longer then 5min..

Then you have dual layer.. Cool concept, great for backing up dvd movies but other then that, too costly atm.. You can burn off 9GB with two single sided discs cheaper then using a single dual layer disc, which btw, is only 8.5GB. From a data backup perspective, I'd rather deal with Single Layer, Dual Sided discs.. 9GB Storage on 1 disc.

I'd also add in the fact that the whole +/- thing is stupid imo. Tell Sony to shove it, pick - to keep tradition with CD's and everyone be happy..

But then again, these are just my opinions...

Here is something to keep in the back of your head if you're considering a dual layer burner.

The way dual layer burners work you HAVE to burn both layers no matter how much (or little) data you're putting on a blank disc. In other words it's gonna take 40 minutes (@2.4 X) to burn 1 gig or 8.5 gigs. I myself will wait for DL speeds to reach about 8X before jumping in. Your 2.4X burner is gonna seem "real slow" in no time at all.

It's double layer. If you look at a Sony writer, they say Double Layer on the box.
