when buying a new printer what are key things to look for? any comments or suggestions on the all in ones? (psc) advice on where to buy also would be appreciated

factor in the cost per page, whether its for printing or faxing documents.
black versus color ink. some cheaper printers for are not as efficient with ink as the more costly models.

look for comparison charts on office max, staples and office depot to get a start. then see how much you want to spend for the hardware. then look for it on sale.

ive been using hps for a while and thats what we use at work. i cant say the ones we use are anything special or good on ink cartridges.

in fact i had to return an hp all in one OfficeJet fax machine for stuck rollers.
we have about 20-40 faxes incoming each day, 5 days a week.
i cant remember the model but it didnt last more then 7 months on the job.

Do Not Use Hp Printers That Require Ink Cartridges>.....!! It"s A Scam!@!!

don't forget to look at what is the scan resolution, don't be stuck with a low resolution one.

but the biggest piece of advice is to ask someone who has and is using such a machine because some of them don't really last that long as far as i know, some of them cost way too much when you look at CPP(cost per page).

anyone had luck with Lexmark? or what brand do you have and why do you like it?

What kind of HP printer doesn't use ink cartridges?

I normally buy Epson. For a multifunction unit, the Epson CX6600 is a great choice. I've had many of my clients buy one and they've all been very happy. My local Micro Center is running them on sale for $110, Staples has them for $150 currently on sale. If you don't want multifunction, the Epson C86 is a great multi-purpose printer. I have the C84 (a little older, but same thing) and I like it very much.

I don't really like Lexmark because I think that the print quality is poor and the inks are very expensive. Definitely stick to HP or more preferably, Epson.

Don't use Lexmark. The cartridge costs are insanely high. I prefer HP and even recommend them to my home and business customers. The cartridge costs are reasonable, the print quality is great, and the printers are fine machines. I use an HP PSC 2510 and haven't had any problems with it.

The laser printers... :o

well, i said that because remember a while back there was a hp thread printer related issue, and the thing with hp printers is that they FORCE YOU to buy their brand ink cartridges....that's why i say IT"S A SCAM......since they have overpriced cartridges and have some smart technology to read the barcode and only accept it once.

Personally, I like Canon printers.

They have individual ink cartridges for each color, they run forever, and they're fairly inexpensive for what you get. I've had Canon printers since 1992, and refuse to buy anything else.

I've had two EPSONs and they were good and generic ink refills were extremely reasonable, but I just got a Canon http://www.spoofee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16665 (Thanks, Spoofee :spoofee: ) and it is faster, much quieter and the paper handling options with a 2 year old daughter are :bigok: :bigok: :bigok: :bigok: :bigok:

I was using inkjet printers for a very long time and found that the ink runs out really fast and the quality isn't very good.
Also, I don't print too much so the tanks would just dry out.

So, I invested in a laser printer and I couldn't be happier. Every print is perfect and the toner lasts forever.

What's funny is that I have a Canon BJ-200 from about 1993 that I got from my dad's old company back then. We used it with our Gateway computer from the same time period. I think about a year ago I plugged it in for some reason and the thing still runs beautifully, so you may have a point.

However, I think that at the current time, Epson printers have seperate ink tanks too and I think the feature/cost ratio is definitely much better than Canon at this point. HP makes nice machines, but I think that the inks are a little more expensive than Epson and the Epsons are a little more reliable.

My roomate is an HP Rep and he showed me a video about how Epson and Canon waste lots more ink than the HP's do because they have to charge and prime the print heads. So the individual colors are not really saving you any money.

Your roommate must be a very good HP employee :)
I wonder if he would still say the same if he works for Canon or Epson... ;)

They do if you don't use all the colors evenly. We go through more cyan cartridges than the others, and it would really stink to have to buy a $30 cartridge when one color runs out vs. a $12 cartridge. It's a waste of ink to throw away a 3 color cartridge when one color runs out but the others are still half full.

I buy HP laser printers from thrift stores for about $10. Never needed to buy toner for them. We have a laserjet 1100 with a 5900 page count for $10 in one store.

One thing about HP printers is that paper feed issue. You can get a free fix from hp.com for it. Even tho they state not for resale, people put them on ebay for $7.95.

Lexmark sucks horribly... i had this lexmark printer- it was like model Z23 or something, and it sucked just horribly. Another one of my printers which was like 3 years older than the lexmark was performing better. I got a new printer- a Canon i560 and its awesome. The cost per cartrdge is like $8 per cartridge, and it has awesome quality, its a photo printer and can print 8.5x11 documents, and it has a great ppm rate. Canon is the way to go.
