The other day I overheard a conversation involving a young boy (co-workers child) saying how he "respected" an adult male in his life because this male had seriously hurt someone and was now in prison. I don't get this - This thug deserves "respect" because he caused someone to be hospitalized? Used to be - WAY back in the 1970's (my day) - we used to respect our elders and showed that respect by lugging the groceries... What do you say?........

I agree with you Lady and i try to raise my kids like that now. Although there are some Teens i woud like to teach some respect to. OLD SCHOOL STYLE!!
:woot:

hmmmm... i have a few students who need to learn about respect... i've done a good job of making them FEAR me... but the other teacher hasn't earned their fear or respect... and back in my day, we respected our teachers simply cuz they were teachers!!!!

Exactly - where has that sense of genuine respect gone?:frusty:

Your co-workers kid probably thinks that "respect" means "admire". The current social-psychiatric-influenced-approval-of-criminal-activities which are glamorized though the media makes the kid think it's cool. The Shadow is no longer there telling us that crime does not pay.

well said, JerryP... we can no longer respect/fear/obey authority... we question it, laugh at it, sue it, or ignore it...

It is OK to question authority, but only to a point. (For example, I would want to know why I were being detained by an officer of the law.)

Kids today, however, think that they have the absolute right to mock and defy authority without giving it further thought.

I agree w/ Jerry.. Kids today think respect means to admire.

But they are 'admiring' and 'idolizing' the wrong things.......

Thank the psychiatrists and their friends the lawyers.

BTW I'm not saying that there are not well intentioned psychiatrists or well intentioned lawyers, just too few to really make a difference. The media hypes up that the bad guy wins, the psychs say that the bad guy is just suffering from an illness and the lawyer makes it so the bad guy doesn't have to be good anyhow. What's not to admire? The bad guy and all the others have the jingle in the pocket - oh and don't forget the drug companies that cash in keeping the general population in a stupor and give the bad guy his "medicine".

The root of it starts way before that.....we must be careful when parenting our child....we might hurt his feelings....:(...there is no more disciplining your child, you can get arrested, tarred and feathered for giving a pat on the behind. *mind you I am not in favor of child abuse* It is not socially acceptable to tell your child "no"......the government should not be in the business of child rearing.....our main agenda now is to be 'politically correct'...

It is not 'politically correct' to tell that fine young man with his jeans around his knees showing off his boxer shorts, "Hey you, you're dressed like a moron. Pull up your pants, your rear end is hanging out!":p

But preco, these are what we have been brainwashed as the correct way to raise a child. It started in the 50s and fortunately my parents never bought into the propaganda.

BTW my butt hanging out might look pretty smart  , same with wearing my baseball cap with the bill covering my neck and the little plastic thing in the front

Agreed, we have Dr. Spock to blame......

It's the whole 'gangsta' nonsense. Sure, there's always been adolescent rebellion, but now it's so main stream and dangerous. We are developing a generation without a conscience. Just me, me, and more of me for me. The bloods and what-not-gangs, they play for keeps.......

Old Mafia....if you were a civilian, you were 'safe'...now, no one is 'safe'.....

If you did that today, you'd probably get your head lopped off with a machete because you dis"respected" the slovenly twit ...

Yup, you cannot tell the Emperor he has no clothes on.....

if you recall the story, though, once the emperor finds out he's naked, he's embarrassed but can't do anything about it. maybe if enough people point out what's going on, it could make a difference. and if not, at least those of us who are dressed have something at which we can point and laugh! LOL

I always use the "backward baseball cap" as my gauge for stupidity. The amount increases with the age or the wearer.

that and how much of the boxers you can see... the worst is when you see crack, boxers, and then the jeans are BELOW the butt...

I have a very good friend who is an ER nurse. He once told me of the 'scumbag rating' (not the term he used, but my memory fails me) applied to patients by the ER staff and paramedics. It was the number of visible tattoos multiplied by the number of missing front teeth. Perhaps degree of ballcap rotation should be factored in as well.

Several years ago, before the age of cheap cellphones, a friend and I had a successful payphone business. One day I was working on a phone in 'ethnic' neighborhood when two boys, about 15 years old, walked by wearing baggy pants half down their backsides, strutting along like true latino 'gangstas'. After the had passed me about 20 yards, gravity overtook one of them, and the pants went to his ankles. In a very un-gangsta-like manner, he fell face down in the grass. His friend watched him go down in flames, forgot to hold his pants up, and suffered the same fate. I was laughing so hard that I could hardly catch my breath. Cars were going by, blowing horns. It was a thing of beauty.
