It's been all over the news about food rationing....:convinced: In our area they said that Costco will be limiting purchases to no more that 4 bags of rice???

This makes me want to go out and buy some rice.:theyareon But, is this starting an unnecessary panic? :sus: Will reports like this actually cause a shortage?

What do you think about all this? And will you go buy some rice now?

I've read on cnn that there are several countries that are experiencing a shortage of rice. Maybe the US is rationing our rice domestically in order to assist the other countries?

Wow-I had not heard about this. Yeah, it kind of does make me want to go buy some (even though we don't eat it that often)--weird. ;)

beans are cheaper, they taste better, you can make chili out of them, and chili makes my husband miserable at night via my hiney air :teeth:

Yes, Costco is limiting rice per day per person, but who needs 80lbs?

I like to get mine at asian markets anyways. I like the sticky rice.

My teen will be crushed... if he had it his way, that's all he'd eat. We usually only have rice once in a while, but with a family of 8, we go through a large box every month or so.

Around here (middle of nowhere midwestern farm country) the big talk is wheat shortage. If the crops fail (drought, flood, etc) this year...

Do you think the 'shortage' or 'rationing' will trickle down to other markets/stores? (such as deli's, ethnic stores, mom & pop establishments, etc.)

To me, I have been feeling the heat of all this economic stuff for a little while and its getting worse and worse everyday. Gas goes up here at what seems like everyday.....I notice it in the grocery stores everytime i go.....even wal-mart prices at jumping up....I read someplace earlier this week that we will be in a full blown recession by mid summer. Who knows......All i know is that it seems like the moremy family and i try to get ahead the more we get pushed down again

I hope not. The only "carb" (and white colored food) I eat these days is rice. I recently found that wheat flour is probably the single worst thing you can eat. I knocked it out completely (and eating anything else "white" - ie sugar, cafeen, etc...) and I lost 30 lbs. I now wear the same size clothes I did when I was 20.

I get my my rice from one of the Chinese take-out places that I like to think is cleaner than others to go with whatever protein I have for lunch or dinner. Al Gore is probably somewhere behind this rice scare which I think is BS. :worry:

Why is there supposedly a shortage?
I know corn prices are way up because of the shortsighted ethanol craze, but why rice?

Basically, millions, most likely even a billion people in Asia live pretty much only on rice, they make too little money to buy much else. Between the population explosion over there, to other nations wanting and using more rice elsewhere has lead to the shortage. It's not necessarily that there's way less rice, it's just there's an increased demand, which in turn has lead to higher prices, which in turn has lead to millions in Asia no longer being able to afford buying even rice to eat. (In another words, they are starving.)

Here are some reads:

Why a rice shortage in the Philippines?
Here is the bottom line from that artice:
Rice is the staple food of Filipinos. Remove it from the tables and there will be mass unrest. Blaming the weather and the limited global supply to explain the rice shortage is not enough. The government has to abandon its agricultural liberalization program and its overdependence on rice imports. The government must adopt emergency measures to increase the rice output of farmers. The time has come to implement a genuine agrarian reform.

Lao People in Remote Areas Still Face Rice Shortage For Up to 6 Months a Year

Summary from that one:
The problems are a combination of inclement weather that prevents remote communities from growing enough rice for their own consumption, and inaccessible roads that prevent rice shipments to reach the people.

Kenya: Rice Shortage Looms

Ecerpt from that one:
Speaking during a meeting of the Council of African Agriculture ministers in Abuja, Nigeria, Dr Seck said that rice production in Asian countries had fallen.

He blamed this on industrial development and population pressure in leading rice producing countries.

Rice shortage impacts businesses and customers

Summary from that one:
The Indian government two weeks ago banned the export of non-basmati rice; a shortage already had created problems among wholesale suppliers. Partly as a result of those restrictions, prices of rice have been soaring in the United States.

ok, one more... I could go on for hours...

As Australia dries, a global shortage of rice

A quote from that article:
The collapse of Australia's rice production is one of several factors contributing to a doubling of rice prices in the last three months — increases that have led the world's largest exporters to restrict exports severely, spurred panicked hoarding in Hong Kong and the Philippines, and set off violent protests in countries including Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Italy, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, the Philippines, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

Thanks, Mrs. Brady! I had been wondering the same thing as Dan, and your post was very helpful in understanding the issue. :)

That was pretty enlightening.

Are you sure there wasn't something said by Al Gore about this? :p

Seriously, thank you for taking the time to put this together.

Nah couldn't be - did you ever see a (PC description) weight challenged individual of Asian descent?
