this is a pretty good deal, I just bought a refurbed 2GB e250 from Froobi, or i would have gotten this one

Can't tell if this is version 1 hardware supported by Rockbox, or version 2 hardware not supported by Rockbox.

Sandisk gave the Rockbox team the hardware specs for Sansa version 1, but are withholding that information for version 2 of the hardware. Therefore, Rockbox is ported to v1, but is taking much more work to port to v2.

Essentially then, the difference is that if this is a v1 then Rockbox will work on it. If it's v2 then Rockbox won't currently work.

They also have the e250 for $29.99.

I just bought an e250 for $25 on newegg, supports rockbox. Amazing little player for the price.

Just an FYI, the ones on buy.com are actually shipped from Woot, and they are the ones who take care of returns as opposed to buy.com.

([email protected] = woot)

Thanks for explaining that. I'm awaiting the e250 to get here and I didn't understand what Rockbox mean't on their site about v2.

Refurbished or not, I've never been disappointed with Sandisk ANYTHING, from mp3 players for myself and the kids to cards for my camera or phone. UNLIKE my TWO ipods that reaked havoc with my computer and needed repair and replacement more times than I was willing to tolerate!

I'm no Apple lover but I always thought iPods worked as designed. Did you really have difficulties with your iPod?

(I have never owned an iPod or Apple product though, and although I have Quicktime installed it is leashed down and handcuffed on my computer-only used for movie trailers. I've got iTunes but only to download podcasts from 1 radio station which requires it)

I agree, I bought one of these refurbished from buy.com and the thing died in like a week. Unfortunately, I misplaced it when I moved so I never got to take advantage of the limited warranty...
Never again...

I have a Sandisk player. I'm looking to buy an iPod this year, but actually the Sandisk player has done well for me in the short time I've had it. I would totally go for this one if I didn't already have one.

This player benefits from being SDHC expandable. If you get a 4 GB model, youn can triple the capacity for relatively cheap, about $20 to $25 more. This thing can become almost like a jukebox for a much lower price than the iPod. The only catch is you need a home computer that can handle SDHC cards.
