So the two restaurants closest to me read:

and

Would you say these two are really 'Gift Certificates' and not 'coupons'?

I think they call the GC because of the giving as a gift option, I personally use them as a coupon. In the area I live many offer $25 with no restrictions

Most near me are valid anytime (some exclude holidays). The most common restriction is a $35 minimum purchase and some add a mandatory 18% tip on the total check before discount. We have eaten and some nice restaurants and saved some money. There are a lot of establishments in my area that use these.
