Restaurant.com is offering a 80% off coupon. You can buy gift certificates for your local restaurants at discount prices + 80% off. Expires 10/12/09

1. Go to Restaurant.com

2. Enter a zip code to shop.

3. Click Add to Cart for the certificates you'd like.

4. Click "Check Out" and enter code FOUR for 80% off. Click "Recalculate Total" to apply your savings.

Tried this last month with the 90% discount $25 G.C. for $1 (I got about 7 of them, been to 3 so far). With the 80% off it will be $2. Typically the $25s sell for $10 minus the discount.

Some quick thoughts:

With the minumum order requirement and the mandatory 18% gratuity that most restaurants have (at least in my area), half of the gift card value is 'eaten up' from the 'tip'.

Typically these restaurants are not 'value' priced, so the entrees will have a premium (to comparable ones in smaller restaurants).

On the plus side, you get to try some places that [potentially] you wouldn't otherwise have gone to if it wasn't for these coupons.

So far 2/3 have been a pleasant experience with the 3rd one being just average. Typical out of pocket for a family of 4 (1 being a baby), so assume 3 entrees ranges in the $50-$60. Again the restaurants that offer these are semi-upscale.

Of course each restaurant is unique and one cannot generalize too much, but I hope the above can put the 80% 'headline' in perspective.

All in all, a decent experience but the fine print need to be read...

I agree. I think the certificates are most valuable for a group of people; however the more you spen, the mopre the 18% tip will be. But then again, it is very rare that they add that tip in anyway (though the last place we went to did).

well said by TonyH, im planning on going to the lunch special instead of dinner for the japanese restaurant i bought a certificate for. $10-15 bento box specials is good to try, but i'm going to try not to hit too much over the required $50 as every item over is +27.25% w/ tax and tip

Has anyone used these before? I see them all the time and always wondered how they make money..

Yes, I have used them a lot. The restaurants don't make any money other than exposing people to their business. Restaurant.com has a low overhead and they are getting the $2 or $4 for the certificates. The restaurants don't get anything from it.
