Men are better in shopping than women: Study

Men are genetically programmed to be better shoppers than women, according to new research.

The researchers looked at shopping patterns in 14 countries, including Britain, China, France and India.

They found that the differences between the genders were similar all over the world and far outweighed the effect of any national characteristics.

A team of scientists found that men's "hunter-gatherer" inheritance means they are more effective at going in for the "kill" on the high street - as they did on prehistoric plains millions of years ago.

They spend less time browsing and have a far clearer idea of what they want - allowing them to navigate shopping trips quickly and effectively, conclude the researchers from Brunel University.

Even men's heart rates increase at the moment of purchase, an echo of the excitement at the climax of a successful Stone Age hunt.

Charles Dennis, co-author of the study, said: "For females, shopping tends to be a leisure activity in which the social aspect is important.

"Compared to males, females tend to visit more shops than necessary, spend longer hours shopping than they need to and shop more often than they need to."

"Males try to complete their shopping in the shortest possible time. Therefore, by being purposeful about shopping, men are more efficient in a strictly objective sense, saving time that might be considered squandered."

He added: "The hunter-gatherer relationship has existed for millions of years - 98 percent of mankind's evolutionary lifespan."

"We simply adapt our behaviour to suit our new environments. That's why we like the natural daylight, greenery and water features of our best shopping centres. They are the environment characteristics that would have sustained life in the savannah millions of years ago when humans were evolving from apes."

Dennis and his co-author Tamira King say the deep-rooted nature of the shopping gender gap means that retailers need to rethink the way they approach men.

Stores may need to introduce male-only shopping areas and "crèches" to occupy men while their female partners shop.

Another study has found a possible cause of the female inefficiency. More than half of women "frequently" return their purchases because they have changed their minds, according to the study commissioned by Prima magazine.

Men will also spend 10 times more on an item than women.

Have you ladies ever noticed how expensive men's clothes and shoes are? I can usually walk out of Macy's with a nice clearance Nine West shoe for somewhere around $20. But I can never find a shoe less then $50 for men. The stores know how women and men shop and they cater to it.

Women want bargains and men want a specific item and will pay whatever it costs.

Interesting post! Thanks. :)

I think this is the key here. I hate going to Wal-mart witj my gf to get one or two things with my gf bc she'll stop and look at everything.

That's kind of funny because when I go somewhere with my bf, he's the one that's always taking his sweet time looking and I'm the one that's ready to go.
Maybe he's the woman and I'm the man!!

I have noticed it since day one I shopped clothes by my own money. It's interesting that there's not much bargain choices for men. There's no Charlotte Russe for men. Gap Outlet is probably the closest, but I'm too old for their styles. It's not like I care less about the prices, but bargain clothing for men is just hard to find. So I have to find bargain somewhere else, or find the balance between price and quality. I'm willing to pay more if the clothes last at least 2 years (most of mine do).

I also think women need (or feel the need) to have more variety than men. I can live by a pair of sandals, a pair of running shoes, and a pair of dress shoes. Now, tell me if any of you ladies can live with only 3 pair of shoes

This is my actual conversation:
"Honey, don't you think you already have red shoes?"
"Yes, but not this kind of red."
"But they just look almost the same color to me."
"You just don't understand."
:zip:

I think we should talk about the objective of shopping for each. They are both completely different. I know for me anyways.. who says .. going to find exactly what you need.. then leaving right away means good shopping? For me, good shopping is browsing.. looking at new styles..comparing ... blah blah blah.

and anyways.. the way shopping is set up right now, they are made for people to browse and look at things and take time.. at least for women's clothing

This article was obviously written by a man who just wants to complain :P LOL

i agree with you. in most clothing stores, the women's clothing is in the back, so that we have to walk through all the other depts just to get to where we want to be. and, to me, a good shopping trip doesn't even have to involve a purchase- window shopping can be just as satisfying... ok ALMOST as satisfying ;)
if i need just one item and i'm limited on time, i can be a hunter/gatherer with the best of em.. but what fun is that? relaxing, taking your time, and finding out what the latest (clothes, gadget, food product) is, is not only fun, but it keeps ya young. and if i spend a few extra dollars on something i don't NEED, at least i'm helping the economy :p

Columbus Day

I read this after a Hockey game where my Spoofer bought a hotdog $4.00, Pretzel $4.00, Sprite 3.00, water & tea $6.00 and then purchased a blanket $40.00 & parked for $20 across the street. Now the difference here is I would have bought a drink & dog from the vendors that line the street outside for 1/2 the price if I didn't have time to eat before the game and lived without a blanket because we already own 2 Rangers blankets I purchased last year from a Spoofee deal for something like $8.00. After enjoying tha game being warm with his new blanket we stumble outside with it and that's when it hits him how much he just spent. :money:

From there he agrees to help me shop (I am still on crutches) at one of my favorite stores where he was amazed I walked out with 4 new pants & 5 new shirts for under $160. I know I could have done even better if I didn't feel guilty having him walk around with me holding everything ;)

Now his hockey spending is like his shopping for clothing he doesn’t think about it just buys what he needs right then at that moment without looking for a better deal or style. I hardly call that a better shopper, maybe for the store but not us. :sus:

Same problems here, so far Filene's Basement is as close as I have seen and I can't get him to shop there. The style of mens clothing at say Macy's has been going down hill for a while so it's harder & harder for him to find what he likes.

Yup, I feel that every time I get a good Spoofee deal. LOL
