The man and I went to a local tattoo shop over the weekend and picked out which ones we wanted. Mine is of a butterfly with scroll like vines and a flower on either end.

I want to get it on my lower back. I don't tolerate major pain really well :o and was wondering if anyone had them and how bad they hurt.

Does the outline hurt more or the coloring?

My avatar is a pic of my tattoo. It is on my lower back and it hurt like hell. Sorry but I thought you should know. The outlining hurt the most. The vibratiing close to my spine was making my legs shake. BUT it was defenitly worth it ! I have to go back and get another one but am a little nervous about it. Good luck with it!

I have a big butterfly on my lower back. Its my only one, and the artist tried to talk me out of it. He said it would hurt too much for my first one, it was the worst spot for someone as skinny as me, and I should get something smaller first and see if I could handle it. I didn't listen. He also suggested I should leave and come back "a little more relaxed" (ie: take a painkiller, don't drink it thins your blood). I didn't listen to that either.
I should've. Halfway through the outline on the first wing, I passed out and fell off the table! I'm a big baby, I know, but it was awful. Hot razor knife is what it felt like. I have piercings, and I handled those fine, but this was PAIN! And, yeah, you can feel it vibrating in your whole body when they go over bone. The good news; once the outline is through, the coloring is a piece of cake.
I'd do it again, in fact I'm getting angel wings and my daughters birthday on my hip sometime in the near future, But I'll defenitely "be more relaxed" this time. And hope I've got more meat on my hip than on my lower back.
Sorry - but you asked! Its bearable, and if you really want it, its worth it!

I have three. They are not the worst pain you will experience in life by any stretch. I have a faerie on my right inner ankle. I have 2 Chinese symbols on my upper left shoulder blade. (anniversary surprise for the DH) And a rose on the back of my neck up near my hair line. The faerie and Chinese symbols were things that I brought into the tattoo shop to have done so they are original. The rose was a piece of flash on the wall. I wish now that I had done something original with that too. I have been thinking about getting something done to it to make it more mine and mine alone. Tattoos hurt more close to bones and in very sensitive areas. The one on the back of my neck hurt the worst. The black outlining hurts the most when doing the tattoo. But the overall feeling is kind of like an uncomfortable buzzing sensation. Perhaps take a couple Tylenol before you go and it might help a bit. Don't take Advil (ibuprofen) or aspirin, they thin the blood too.

Have you considered having something custom made for you guys? Often times the tattoo studio has at least one artist that does custom artwork. If they don't, you could always consult a local artist or even head online and do a search for custom tattoo art. The way I see it is, the flash you see on the walls in a studio is what everyone is choosing from. Somone else is probably walking around with the same tattoo, possibly in the same spot. If you want something unique and extra special give some thought to custom art. ...just my 2 cents... ;)

my brother is covered in tattoos, so i figure it can't be THAT bad, but i have no personal experience. my 2 cents is that you don't have to get it done. i mean, if you really want to, then that's great, but i've never thought "gosh, i really wish i had a tattoo" for more than a day or two. i figure it's better to NOT do it and sometimes wish for one than to do it and regret it later. henna tattoos are fun and don't hurt ;)

if you do get it done, be sure to take a pic of it for us, and tell us how it went!!

oh, and my sister in law has a bunch of tattoos- her leg, her lower back, and her... uh... nether regions... and she didn't have problems with any of them... and she's a pretty frail thing- allergic to just about everything, 5'9" and about 120#... so i'm guessing lonefive21 is the exception.

good luck, babs :)

They will usually alter a picture they have there of their tattoo selection also. Both of mine were altered to what I wanted from the originals.

As for originals...hopefully there isn't anyone else out there w/ a Indian/German backgorund wanting the same tattoo as I have and am going to get
The Indian bird means Free of Care and I am going to get Sorglos..which is German meaning the same thing.

I have a heart vines with flowers on my left back shoulder blade. Not really a pain, just like 'scratching' I had it a few years, I'll get another one someday.....probably on my right hip in the back...just need to decide...no rush. (I like the discrete ones...they're only seen when I want them to be seen ;) )

At least you could start saving money now for Laser treatment to have it removed...
Just kidding, well kind of...I know many people who have gotten tattoos then years later gone through the painfull Laser Remvoal process to get rid of it....

Are you sure?? How about a Henna ink tattoo then you can get a new one every few months, non-permanent.

Good Luck!!!

I'm not an exception, I'm 5'2" 98#, I'm just a baby. At least I was, until I had a baby - That was much worse than the tattoo! ;)

Well I have plenty of fat so I am not worried about that. I have thought about having a butterfly tattoo for years. They have a strong meaning to me.

The advice about having an original tat, well I picked the butterfly and then picked the vine and flowers to make it one whole tattoo, hopefully, that is originial enough since it was a 'hodge podge' of different tats that they had displayed.

And, I do have enough "happy pills" around here so I hope I don't feel that much pain ;) Gah! In the next few weeks I should have it, if I don't chicken out first.

Thanks everyone :)

Coolness! I bet it is going to look awesome! :D

I have a flower and scroll work across my lower back, it hurts only when the needle touches the skin, when they let off, it is like immediate relief. It hurt me more in my fatty areas, when the needle got closer to my love handles. But if roget i have it all the time cuz i never see it! people remind me though when i am sitting down and my shirt rides up.,,, hee hee, go for it though!

i have one on my right foot of two flowers. One is orange, one purple with green leaves. It didn't hurt that bad, mostly the outlining, and when the tip of the leaf was being outlined right below my toes.
good luck!!

Hopefully none of this pain talk discouraged you. When it's all healed you should post a pic of it :) :camera:

I have 8 and I can tell you it doesn't hurt that bad...except in certain places where there's more fatty tissue. I would say it's mostly in your head...just thinking about it makes you nervous cuz you think it will hurt. I still do that even though I've been through it  Don't know if this helps at all...just thought I'd add my two pennies.

True or False

I was sent a pm here, stating that if I got a tattoo, that I would be unable to donate blood if the case ever surfaced. Is that true or false? Seriously, I never heard of such a thing, but then again, what do I know. Not much apparently LOL

Tattoo
Wait 12 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis. Learn more about hepatitis and blood donation.

Acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile technique. Only a few states currently regulate tattoo facilities, so most donors with tattoos must wait 12 months after tattoo application before donating blood. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation.

Well Babs, apparently there is truth to that. It seems it is discouraged for 12 mos. after getting a tattoo. Good to know. :)

Thanks Preco for finding out that info. 12 months eh? Pfffffft. I'm getting the tat!
