Teachers work very hard and do not earn a lot. Impersonating a teacher to get something free and of limited quantity means a hard working teacher has to pay out of their own pocket for these needed supplies - lying on a form to get something inteneded for someone else is just wrong! :thumbs_do

My wife is a Teacher. Teachers get $200 credit on taxes to pay for school supplies. They aren't the highest paid professionals but they get by. Keep in mind that they get 3 months off per year, a long with discounts everywhere.

That 200 dollar credit does nothing to cover the expenses I have in my classroom. I would also LOVE to have 3 months off!!! We get out the last day of May and go back the first day in August. The in-between months are full of workshops, training, and extra stuff now required for the No Child Left Behind Act! If it hasn't hit your state yet, it soon will......there will be no more loooong summers! Quick....retire while we still remember what school used to be like!!!

Where does she teach? I only get 2 months off. What discounts everywhere? Please share! And be supportive of her. I'm not sure if you fully understand what it is like to be a teacher. You sound like you think everything is a-ok with the way teachers are treated. If you think everything is ok, you are not paying attention to what is going on with your own wife.

Teachers get discounts at Staples, OfficeMax, OfficeDepot, and many other places. If you ask around locally, you might find a business who's willing to "sponsor" your school. We had an agreement with a Cici's pizza who gave us coupons for free pizza to give to good kids.

As far as his wife, she might teach elementary school. They seem to be happier. And they always have newer supplies and more support.

Teachers get three months off every summer

Must be using that "new math" -- Last day of school for me was June 22. Back to school August 30. That doesn't include the 5 weeks of classes (on my dime) I'm scheduled to be taking this summer, so I can keep my certificate current.

I knew all of this going into teaching, but I've still had it up to here with people spouting crap about how great teachers have it.

This is probably one of those instances where it would not be wise to pose as a teacher. As far as the discussion about vacations, most of us are lucky to get 3 weeks off every year, so I wouldn't complain too much about having 2-3 months off.

Seaside: My only complaint is that people often think teachers get more time off than they do. There's a difference between 2 months off and 3 months off. Also, keep in mind that most other jobs don't follow you home. Teachers usually have their own homework when the school day is over. Some teachers even work all summer coaching sports teams. Since school let out I've been working with the dance team that I "coach," even though I have absolutely no background in dance. I get a one time $1000 bonus for working with the dance team from June to May. The dance instructor that we hire to come in once in a while is paid more than that.

Liss: I've looked into discounts for teachers at Office Max and Office Depot, but the only ones I have discovered are not very useful, such as 10% discounts on big ticket items that I can't afford or don't need. Here are the most recent coupons I have from OfficeMax, but they expired on 6/25:

5% off any electronics purchase (Whoopee. Sales tax is 9.5% in TN, so that would hardly make a dent.)

10% off any supply purchase (Oh good, no sales tax when I spend my own money on supplies for my classroom. It's not good for ink.)

$25 off any OfficeMax print & document services order of $75 or more (I guess this one is just in case I get the urge to use $75 of my own money to pay for copies for my classroom, which I could make at school on their dime in the teachers' workroom.)

I was excited when I first heard about MaxPerks for teachers, so I signed up, but then I found out it's really a joke. I don't know why they think these coupons would be useful to teachers.

I don't know about Staples because the nearest one is an hour away. You are probably right about elementary school teachers--I teach high school.

The discounts and the money are not the reason I went into teaching, and I'm not trying to complain about the lack of discounts and low pay. I'm just trying to paint a more accurate picture for the non-teachers reading and posting on this board. Although I only make about $27,000 a year after I pay my NEA dues (so I will be protected in the rare event of a lawsuit), I love my job and I can't imagine doing anything else, but it really irks me when the general public thinks teachers have it made in the shade. It is really a challenging profession with fewer financial rewards than people think.

I gotta agree on this one... when I comes to education I don't mess with it... if it's for some IT Professional to hell with it.

And that is why I do not teach any more.

I agree, do not ruin it for the teachers. I taught for 6 years and could hardly make ends meet. I even got my supplemental pay for coaching the schools boys and girls soccer team. I avg. it out and got paid approx. $1.82 per hour doing it. Plus, since the soccer team didn't have a big budget, I ended up purchasing almost $750-800 worth of materials for the team with my own money. This was over 6 years mind you, but that is just for after school activities. I put twice that into my class room. Even though I don't take advantage of the teacher discounts here, I do send them to all my teacher friends and they love me for it. Thanks to all those who find them.

I've seen Border's having special Teacher Only discount days!!

My Brother and Sister in law are both teachers and I'm sure they'll appreciate the free stuff. They got done with school in the middle of June and then had to take several weeks of class. He called me yesterday and is started back to school already, the kids come back on Monday. He only had about 5 weeks off.
