A friend of mine is having a fund raiser in the summer and I was put in charge of the food and drinks. There will be 75-100 (possibly more) guests. They are wanting to do pig roasts. My questions:

1. How many people does one pig feed? Do I need to get more than one? *I seriously have no clue on this one* ANY tips on this one would be great! There will be sides, so I know that will (hopefully) cut down on portion sizes.

2. How many drinks can I get out of a keg? This is going to be regular beer....no specialty beers.

Thanks in advance!!

Shucks.......you didn't say whether or not it is a "Suckling Baby Piggy" or one of the more mature or meaty pigs that get roasted on the spit? A more mature piggy will feed your crowd easily. Not so a suckling. It is easy to figure out keg amounts! Call your local liquor store and ask them for serving sizes. Whoever will deliver your kegs should know, or ask a local college fraternity student! LOL I am thinking back to my brother's wedding and we had seventy folks and two full kegs of beer, not much was leftover! But our family is Polish, and, that speaks unto itself!

from what I was told about kegs from my "friend".
assuming the serving of beer is 12 oz
a 5 gallon keg yields 53 servings
a 7.75 gallon keg yields 82 servings
a 15.5 gallon keg yields 164 servings

ya know, not that i ever spent any my college nights partying or anything. i was always the perfect student.

Butty, here is a website I found about portion sizes, cooking time and etc...
http://www.spittingpig.co.uk/questions.asp

and let me say - I had pit roasted pig in Hawaii and it was the best pork I have ever had in my life. My cousin and I both had seconds......

Thanks guys! Keep the suggestions coming. I want to get as many opinions as possible.

Do you need to also plan for an alternative entree, for folks whose diet or choices don't allow for pig?

Did someone say "keg"????

Ok - If I'm invited you will need two kegs:

one for me and one for everyone else .

(hots wings are optional)

Good point. Dont forget about any Jewish or vegetarian attendants. They shouldnt be relegated to eating just pasta salad and corn on the cob. Of course I have no suggestion, so Ill just back away slowly.

i'm a vegetarian and i never have any problem making a meal from the sides. skipping the meat is the same as not getting a serving of pasta salad in my opinion. dont worry about it i wouldnt

Well...... I am trying to become a vegetarian (can't get rid of chicken or fish). With that being said...this is mainly a man's man fund raiser. Very macho, "we eat meat and drink beer". I had to talk them into the sides. It is going to mainly be friends, so no one is afraid of offending anyone and what they are making is what they are making. No ifs ands or buts and everyone is cool w/ it. I volunteered/ was asked to do my part because (since I am a practicing vegetarian) I didn't want to see waste when it came to the pig. They were talking about getting three pigs. This is going to take place on a campground where there is no refrigeration so what doesn't get eaten will b waste.
Digriz, I would hold you to that keg...so it's best that I don't invite you.

We had a roasted pig for my husband's union picnic and they only had one pig. There was a lot of meat to go around. They also has sides ( beans and potato salad). There was probably over 100 people there.

That "Rats." made me think immediately of Charlie Brown with is head hung low.

Thanks for your help everyone...I greatly appreciated it! :bigok:

I'd be calling around to barbecue places to see if I could get one of them to cater at a reduced rate for the publicity.

Don't forget to 'foil the ears'....;)

lol

We used to do a whole lamb on the spit for Greek Easter...but we changed it to a pig roast because it looked too much like my dog!:p Anywho, we always reminded them that they must 'foil the ears' (so they don't burn). One year after telling them that, I went back out to the pig and there were about 10 guys hanging around the pig.....all of the guys had 'foiled' their ears.......you had to be there...;)...of course then it went to foil bow ties and such....
