Anyone know anything about buying used treadmills? I'm watching Craigslist for a good deal on a used one, but it just seems like it's so risky. How would I know if it actually works properly without testing it for 30 mins?

Also, what is a good price? Pretty much everyone wants at least $100 for bottom of the line units and the higher end units are listed for as much as $500. I just want something cheap, so I don't want anything high end. But is $100 on a used unit that originally cost $500ish a good deal?

This now seems more difficult than I originally anticipated.

Addition: I should probably note that I don't plan to use it to excercise. I'm planning to build a treadmill desk. I probably won't walk more than a couple miles an hour or so while working. If I excercise, I have a gym at my apartment building and a nature trail near the house.

I wouldn't do it. My in-laws bought one cheap....and it didn't last very long. You'll never know if someone made a quick fix just to get it out the door.

Wait, you're building a treadmill deks?!?! So, you're going to be working/walking on your desk? Close your blinds.

:pound: ok, just clicked on your link. You must be extra talented. I've flown off the back of mine while adjusting the tv volume with the remote.

That's what I'm afraid of. And I just read on another link that temperature\humidity affects the life of a treadmill. So if someone kept it in a garage, then it's likely to have issues just because of that. I wanted to find one cheap that way I could convince my wife that this idea was worth investing in a better treadmill for the long term. However I need something that will work for a couple months before I will invest in a good treadmill. If I get a treadmill that doesn't last a month, then it's likely to hurt my cause more than help it.

LOL. Yes... the treadmill desk. But I'll be using it at slow speeds. I hear you get more coordinated at it with time.

wow... when i read treadmill desk, i had all these silly ideas in my head... now that I looked at the blog... that is amazing!! It is realy tempting to do this!! Especially since I spend more than 8 hours every day infront of the computer.

Have you had a chance to listen to any of the interviews of the doctor from the Mayo Clinic?

There was an article in Men's Health I was reading just talking about how people that are in great shape by working out at night but still sit all day, will still have the same health problems and risk of heart disease. The risk comes from sitting too much. So regardless of working out for an hour, the sitting is still going to kill me early. This seems like a perfect solution to me too.

I'm going to try to steal my mother-in-law's treadmill to start the experiment. And if I follow through with it, my wife is fine with me buying a good treadmill. A few simple items from Home Depot and it wouldn't be hard to build the desk.

If you do this too, let me know. I'm so excited about it.

Do you have a link to that Men's Health article? Pretty impressive that you're building a treadmill desk!

Live anywhere near Chicago? I'm selling my Nordic Track iFit treadmill...

One of the things my son had to do in visual therapy was to jump on a trampoline :target:while reading something on the wall. Good luck, your visual tracking skills will get better too!

Hahahaha... Yeah, I think I'll stick to the treadmill desk. I'm not thaaaat coordinated.

sheesh... with all the drafting rulers and exacto knives on my desk.. that would be a quick trip to the ER

But yet you were considering the treadmill desk? What happens when you accidentally step off the back of the treadmill and fall foward?

 I didn't mean to actually make a trampoline desk...... While walking, one tends to 'bob' up and down a bit (although obviously not as much bobbing as there is on a trampoline) and therefore that will strengthen your visual tracking skills.

Now, I don't think Scoopy should try her drafting skills while on a treadmill nor a trampoline.....word has it that....:shhh:she's klutzy
