My free subscription to Norton is running out and I will not be buying it. I use spybot and Avast on all my desktops, along with spyware blaster and glary utilities. This is my first laptop and I want to make sure it is safe and secure. What does anyone recommend as good spyware/virus programs that are free to use?

These are the ones I recommend for my clients:
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Spybot Search & Destroy
  • MalwareBytes
  • Super Anti-spyware

The easiest way to download them is to go to Ninite and check the programs you want to install (along with any others as well). Or you can click here and get the installer for just those programs. The nice thing is that Ninite won't install the junk toolbars you might get otherwise.

(As a side note, I use the Pro version of Ninite to update my client's computers. It is a very worthwhile tool!)

I've had a good experience with Free AVG. Any thoughts on that Spaz?

I have both MalwareBytes and Norton on mine and have been safe...Had Kaspersky and it was good but not free

I used AVG for quite a while and was very happy with it until my laptop started throwing bluescreens.
After about 3 days of working on it I gave up and took it to a shop. They found over 100 infected files and introduced me to Microsoft Security Essentials.
When I loaded MSE on the other Windows machines I have, it found bugs in all of them. They had all been running AVG.
Another good tool I've found is called combofix. It finds and corrects numerous problems.
Google it if you're interested. It comes from an outfit called bleeping software.

Free AVG, and even paid AVG, has been causing a lot of problems for my clients lately. The only way to remove it is to use an uninstall tool that AVG has written. Plus now, I am working through a problem caused by it, I believe, that has a computer completely down for a couple of days so far. (Google C000135 %hs for more information.)

Regarding ComboFix, be sure to ONLY download it from BleepingComputer. You can read about it here, then download it.

Spaz, what do you think of Avast? I have used it for years on all my desktops and haven't really had any problems with viruses. Will it work OK on a laptop? I am going to look into the Microsoft Security Essentials you suggested.

Avast seems to be OK. I haven't had any problems, although I hate the yearly registration.

I just downloaded and installed the Microsoft one you suggested. It found no problems. I also have windows defender installed on my laptop. Will they work good together or do I need to uninstall windows defender? Do I need spybot also?

Microsoft will automatically disable Windows Defender. Spybot is more for cleaning up than a pro-active program, but I recommend it just to run once a week in case anything does sneak by the A/V program.

Yeah, I noticed it was disabled so I left it off. I am going to put spybot on it also. I usually set it to run a scan once a week. Sorry I ask so many questions, but that is how we learn. Thanks for the help.

Ask away. I'd rather you do that than get infected and then wonder what to do. It's easier to be proactive than fight a nasty viral infection.

One more question...How do you feel about Glary Utilities?
