Wifey and I are looking to "maximize on our spending habits" by using a "points" or reimbursment type credit card. We've never signed up for one of these before, preferring to stay with a safe, low APR, flexible credit card. We are now looking in to getting one that would be used for purchases, gas, etc. and would like to get points toward airfare, hotels, even cash back but I don't know where to start. Do you have a preferred card? Did you have one that was a bad experience (complicated, hard to "cash in", etc.)? Thanks for the input.

My parents used to have a MasterCard Sony Card, then the program was discontinued. We used to get a lot of free Sony stuff from it, I think the program has been reincarnated as a Visa, not sure if it's as good as it was. Now they've been using an American Express from Costco which gives you like 2% back on selected purchases and 1% on everything else. Either way, American Express customer service is really good and it works well. The old MasterCard Sony Card was merged into a Diamond Rewards Card, but the program isn't as good so my parents just use it where American Express isn't accepted.

Personally, I have a Visa Check Card attached to my bank account with a PayPal debit which gives me 1.5% back on all the purchases I make with it.

I have a Citi Mastercard that gives 1% back on everything and 5% back on purchases at Grocery Stores, Gas Stations, and some other place that I can't rember right now. Walmart, Target, Sams etc.. are not considered Grocery stores though. I use it for work and so far I havn't had any problems. You have to accumlicate at least $50 before they will send you the money though.

I also have the Citi card with the same rewards. One thing to consider with this card though is that you are limited to $300 in cash back a year. So, I have a couple other cards I use, depending on my purchase.

One is a Visa from National City. 4% at gas stations and 1% every where else. The things I like about this card is it is accessable though my online National City account and the cash back is automatically added to your account each month in increments of $5.

The other card I use is Discover. They offer 1% on purchases with cash back or rewards in increments of $20. However, lately they have had cash back promotions. For example, one promotion they had at the begining of the year was 5% back on education, fitness memberships and such. So, I paid my Fall tution to get back 5% on it.

Will be interested to hear what others use.

I use AMEX(Small Business) the point are great and the discounts are even better. give them a look :bigok:

i used Discover card

1/ Discover card has 5% cash back bonus on gas, museum, parks, aquariums, zoos, etc.

2/ you can redeem cash back bonus award (earned from using Discover card) by cashing, doubling it or turning $20 award into $30 or $25 certificate. i recently turned my $20 award into $25 Staples certificate (at this point, i made $5 by doing this) and use it to buy 4 Fuji Premium Plus glossy photo paper packs (two 4" x 6" and two 8½" x 11") at Staples this morning (of course i got to pay additional money to the $25 certificate.) since Staples allows a total of four rebates on these photo paper packs and they're free after rebate, i'll get back what i paid (tax excluded) for all these 4 photo paper packs, including the $25 Staples certificate. (but, i turned a non-cashable $25 certificate into cash, when i receive the rebate check later on.)

I use ExxonMobil Mastercard:

It's very similar to that of jakedasnake's Chase, but without annual fee (which you would have to spend annually between 633 to 1900 to break-even). No limit on the rebates and they're posted for next billing cycle purchases, so I don't have to request for them. I've used for about 5 years and it has served me well. Great and prompt service, even when I was out of the country. The drawback, to maximize rebates you have to use Exxon or Mobil gas which I always do. You'll also get 3% rebates on any purchases done at Exxon or Mobil stations. I sometimes got offers for 0% APR for credit transfer.

Thanks for the replies on the thread...I gues I just need to identify which card will meet our needs (and pay back the most) for our situation.

I work for discover and the cash bonus thing isn't worth it at all. They change the percent so it is now 2%. For example if you spend $1000 you will only get $2.50 not of a biggie.
