17 girls at Gloucester High School are expecting babies. By May, several students had returned multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and on hearing the results, "some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Sullivan says. All it took was a few simple questions before nearly half the expecting students, none older than 16, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together.

They have an on-site day care center at the high school?!!! Perhaps they should rethink the message they're sending to kids.

I think the town ought to thank the pioneering efforts of Murphy Brown, the Academy Awards, and Britney Spears for sending the "p.c." message to those little girls.

Yikes!!

I recently found that my old High School now has day care on site.
There are obviously pros and cons to that.
On the one side the don't have to worry about finding a sitter so they can finish school, but on the other is it promoting? Are these girls not going to worry about getting pregnant because they will have sitters?

I read awhile back about some teen mothers that are trying to get 4 weeks maternity leave into the high school. I know they need to finish school but it is so sad that they now have to set up this policy.

I can see wanting to support students so they can finish high school; I just wonder if a day care on-site makes having kids in high school too "normal" and acceptable. It's really a dilemma. :ohwell:

It's hard enough raising a kid with two involved adult parents, I wonder how girls under 16 can possibly do it on their own --- I guess the grandparents must really raise them. :sus:

As an aside, why the heck doesn't my workplace have on-site day-care if a high school has one? :mmph:

This is just sad . . . . . I know you can't watch your kids 24/7 but I feel that if some parents would take a more active part is their kids lives they would know what is going on with them and may possibly have been able to stop some of the things they are doing. I know when I was a teenager my parents were there whether I wanted to be or not. Just my opinion.

Personally, I hope that my daughter feels comfortable enough with me to be HONEST about sex. When it is time for the "talk," I plan to make it clear to her that if she is sexually active or is considering being sexually active she HAS to be on the pill.

One thing about the girls from this high school, if it was my child who was pregnant by some 24 year old man, I would see that he was held legally accountable for the child. Meaning, I would make sure he was taken to family court to pay child support and/or prosecuted for statutory rape. Since the age of consent in Mass is 16 years old if the teen conceived before her 16th birthday, a statutory rape charge on this man might be appropriate.

Good lord! Now I know Im not old but when I was in high school which was only 8 years ago this didnt happen! One girl in our class out of 800 was pregnant and that was Tabu! I live in ORLANDO FL not like its a small town! An on site day care is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and yes these girls are thinking woohoo free daycare! Well here how bout we do this for all the kids in school we can make a separate wing of the school into a hotel rooms free of charge OF COURSE put a bowl of condoms on a nightstand and see what happens. If there is an accident lets just make sure they can finish their school and provide free education and free daycare!! UGH This is where liberal thinking gets us. "oh lets be our childrens best friend" FORGET THAT they need to be parents!
Back to the article though with the 24yo homeless man!! So did the girl give him a big mac for a baby?>!?!?!?!?!?
This should be criminal they wanna bring a child in the world because they are bored and feel unloved lonely or whatever? That is absolute bullocks!!

Ok im done with my rant! although i could keep goin!

Please refresh my memory.

What grade were you in when you had your first child, and how large an influence were Murphy, the Academy, and Britney in that situation?
