What makes someone a "contributor"?

At first I thought it was for frequent posters but that's not necessarily the case. Some contributors have over 1,000 posts and some have less than 200.
There are plenty of those who post more than a fair share in the freebie section who aren't recognized. Just like to know, because it could cause some hurt feelings over a simple misunderstanding. That's all.
