I'm not a chemist so I don't know how to accurate do the 50/50 mix of isopropanol to clean, plus i don't have good wipers

does anyone clean lcd's regularly that can suggest products bought either on online like newegg or buy.com or at places like costco that's a deal?

I may have screwed up my lcd monitor since I didn't know that there are "special" products and ways to clean lcd's and used windex with a moist towel to clean off debris on my laptop and now, I notice when the screen is turned off and is black in the background, there's all these oily stains and I tried using water to make them go away but it keeps coming back.

can someone help?

Release the hounds!

Did you try dunking the whole monitor into a bucket of water with a 37% clorox solution?

That's all I got.

Aren't they safe to put into the dishwasher? :hmmmm2:

i can't dunk this since this is a laptop lcd, so it's attached to electronics, and I don't think it will function if even a drop of that stuff gets inside, and...i don't know how to measure 37% :)

Don't use WIndex.

If you have a new monitor, it came with an instruction book that says how to clean it. I just use water & a lint free cloth or something.

If you have a car with moon roof , take it to touch free car wash place and open the moon roof hold your computer outside - or

If you call your Laptop company, they will send you some funky cloth - you can use that also to clean. You could buy LCD cleaner moist wipes also, I use those things once in 6 month or so

the "oily" stains are likely signs that your windex treatment has begun to remove some of the optical coatings from the screen. too late, that part can't be fixed. but you can avoid making it worse.

as already recommended, water is the safest cleaning agent. you could also get yourself a microfiber cloth, like the ones used for cleaning eyeglasses. for soil the water can't get, I picked up a box of two hundred Flents lens cleaning wipes at Costco for a few bucks.

I spray a little isopropyl alcohol on a soft rag and wipe it clean. Don't spray the screen because some liquid might get inside.

so when the coating is removed, will staring at the LCD screen now cause any type of radiation or eye damage or what's that coating for anyways?

Eye damage? radiation??

How close are you sitting to the screen???

Is that oily stain really a nose print?

This should help with the stain.....:bigok:

:secret: it's a nose protector....what did you think it was?

Mike, this is the wrong place to ask serious questions.

There is no radiation coming from your LCD screen, other than the light you see.

Don't listen to DanC.

Stand back about eight feet away from your LCD screen or else you'll burn your retinas out! That light is about 8,000 megajewels of radiation! DanC wants you to burn your eyes out.

You only have to look at DanC's avatar (it's his high school year book picture) - you see those corrective goggles? It's A.R.P. (advanced retinas pigmentosis). As a child, DanC typed away at his LCD monitor from about two feet away. Burned his eyes out.

What he doesn't tell you is that it is his mission in life to get others to ignore the safety precautions of today's LCD monitors.

DanC's motto is 'Misery loves company."

I put my LCD monitor under the back passenger wheel of my car (with no one else in the car) and backed up and drove forward two times and the stains (oily fingerprints) lifted right out. Now you cant have anyone else in the car with you and it has to be the back passenger side - or else the weight of another person or same side you are sitting on, will short out the power cord.....

According to my instruction booklet, Monk is right-(imagine that! :proud:) Microfiber cloths are the way to go. Mine came with one. You can also purchase a little squirt bottle of LCD screen cleaner at Staples.

For me the microfiber cloth and Staples cleaner has handled all the "my hands are clean" LIES from my little avatars.
