rather than making two threads, one for advice on what specs to look for and the price range for camcords and another thread on laptops, i figure you guys know of some sites that can some up on reviews and answer these questions......cuz i'm in need of buying them both by the end of this summer.

Google is where I start. If it's a specific product I will do a search for 'product name reviews' or such.

there's so many that tends to be rated highly, that's why i usually ask forum members who already have a model so they can give their personal opinions

I'm a big fan on Canon for both still digital cameras and DV cams. I find that they're really easy to use, but I've also been brought up on Canon since it's all we have at school, and I recommend most people to buy Canon. I just find that Canon is the golden standard and they're great to use. We have some older Canon Opturas and ZR cams that are a few years old being abused in my school and they work great.

I'd recommend the Canon Elura series highly, just make sure to avoid the Elura 80 as it's missing some key features, my friend learned that when he ordered his. If you want something cheap, the ZR100 and ZR200 are good choices.

I usually go on Cnet.com to see and compare. Since I think CNET's reviews are a bit biased, I go on Amazon.com or just search on google to see the reviews of the items I liked out of cnet.

CNET is great indeed, although definitely biased, I enjoy reading it.

oh okay....yeah, i have a canon model digital camera..but it sucks for the video portion compared to other cameras cuz it limits you to 30 seconds of recording before it just stops abruptly and clears the buffer.....where as other cameras like sony that i saw was able to record an hour nonstop...

so that's why i need a digital camcorder, but with that, i don't know what specs people look at when determining what is good....besides the usual optical zoom..what common important features would want someone to go buy a 300 dollar one instead of a 150...?

update: yay, i bought a laptop during that dell sale......let's hope that was a good deal and i didn't hurt myself by being hasty and finding out in august before school starts again that they have a better deal.
