Spoofee's Picture's That Changed The World thread has me thinking......
Throughout history we can all remember were we were when certain events took place. Share your story.

Here are a few that I can remember..

The Challenger explosion - I was in the 6th grade and we were watching it in the classroom. What a reaction when on the screen we as a group of 11 year old saw the spaceship explode into pieces like that.

Princess Diana's Death - I was at my mom's watching Saturday Night Live when it was interrupted with the news. I still believe to this day that it wasn't an accident, but a murder. Just my two cents.

9/11 - I was at my new job in a training class. We were told about the first tower and thought it to be an accident.
When we were given the news about the 2nd tower we knew it was more than that. All of our downtown offices closed that day, and I will never forget the feeling of walking to the parking garage two blocks from my building, in a city that was empty knowing that our country had just been attacked.

Now, share your stories!

The Challenger Explosion........Just got off duty, was home in my recliner watching "The Price Is Right" before grabbing some zzzzzzzzz's when the news broke in with the disaster. Rightly froze me to that chair. I can remember my donut coming up in my throat as I watched that plume of smoke go in all directions. Funny, I have a magnet on my fridge of the Challenger, and, a friend of mine sent me pictures of the Challenger prior to liftoff. I still get chills looking at both articles. However, I encourage support of our space program, it is the future.

Princess Diana's Death.......Was watching the late news when they broke in with the news, and, the first pictures of the car wreck. I knew she didn't have a prayer's shot in hell of surviving. Just a bad accident that should never have happened. Time to let the Princess rest in peace.

The 9/11 Attack....Mom and I were having breakfast and watching tv when the news broke. We held each other in horror watching the towers fall. I immediately called my son, who, was working for Uniformed Services over in D.C. He quickly said "Mom I am off to Fort Detrick to begin prepping for body part identification." My son was only eighteen years old at the time, and, has never gotten over having to sift through the rumble looking for parts of whatever they could find at the time. I didn't see my son for three weeks, and it was months before we could move samples to a less restricted area. When I finally could see him, I hugged and hugged him, and, we both cried. It changed my life dramatically. God bless America, all of our military, and, our families.

Challenger: I don't remember where I was. I think I was too young.

Princess Diana: In high school, my friend Leah told a bunch of us in first period English class that she read in the paper that she died and we couldn't believe it.

9/11: I overheard another student telling her boyfriend about it on the phone in the college library when I was on my way out of there to go to chapel. I didn't believe her, I thought she had just misunderstood the news, but they told us the same thing in chapel and then in the cafeteria during lunch they had the news playing on tv.

Challenger Explosion: I too was in 6th grade. We weren't watching it but I remember another teacher came in to the room to tell us about it.

Princess Diana: Have no clue. I guess it didn't really matter to me.

9/11: Was at home when my mother called to tell me about it.

OJ Simpson acquittal: Working at a hotel and watching the TV. When the verdict was about to be announced, I actually stopped what I was doing and sat down. I was soooo peeved off the rest of the day.

Challenger: I was only 5 so I don't remember that at all.

Princess Di: I was sitting in my livingroom with my family when the news broke. I really didn't know much about her at the time though.....

9/11: I was at work, and I was pregnant. One of the teachers told us what had happened, and we thought she'd misunderstood. When I found out she was right, I was really sad about bringing a baby into this kind of world.... :(

Challenger- I was in Germany, pregnant with my son. They interupted the Today show. I stood and watched, hoping and praying there would be a paracute or some glimpse of hope.

Princess Di- I heard about it the next day. I was driving and heard the news. I had to pull over.

9-11 I was at work. A co-worked stepped over to the deli next door. She came back to tell us it was on TV. We all clicked on the internet and saw the first tower. We assumed it was an accident too. Then we saw the second. Then our internet was cut off because our IT department told us it was an act of war.... I felt so sick.

Challenger -- working a consulting job for a company in Raleigh, NC. Everyone stopped work to try to get news updates.

Di -- same as spaz. I don't know. heard about it afterwards.

9/11 -- heard about the first plane on the radio driving in to work. soon as i got there, told my boss, and we went to the fitness room, which had a tv, and saw the second plane hit.

OJ -- at the office. we had borrowed a tv from somewhere, and had it playing in a conference room right by our desks. we were all shocked at the verdict. totally expected the other way.

I remember the Challenger explosion very well. I worked at a TV station in MS then & that is all we showed from about 10AM on until I got off work that evening. We had so many complaints because we didn't show anything else that day.

I was in KY when Diana died but I don't remember when it was. I was a little mad because Mother Teresa died too around the same time, and all anyone cared about or the TV talked about was DIANA.

9/11 we were just getting up when a friend called & told us about it then all my husband did was sit & watch it over & over again. He wouldn't let our boys go back to school for a week.

Challenger: I don't remember

Princess Diana: I had just found out I was pregnant. I wasn't thinking about much, but the pregnancy. I can't believe it's been ten years.

Simpson chase: I was a t.a. for one of the math teachers at my school and instead of teaching, he had the t.v. on so we could watch.

9-11: I was at home folding laundry while Amber was napping. This was one of the only times I have openly cried while watching the news.

The other time....when John Ritter died.
:(

Challenger Explosions: In 5th grade with a group of kids all watching the launch.

Princess Diana: My husband and I were watching TV when we saw the news of her death.

9/11: I had just started a new job and was told be some my collegues that they heard abou it on the radio.

Challenger - I was in 4th grade and the whole school had tv's in their own classroom to watch it. I think we had even did some astronaut/spaceship/space lesson before. The room was real quiet and my teacher had tears coming down her face. It was my first experience with tragedy.

Princess Diana- I was watching SNL too when the news broke. It seemed so surreal....

Simpson Chase - I was ironing when the news broke in. It provided enough "entertainment" for me to finish my whole basket as I was thinking "what the heck????"

9/11 - I was getting ready for work, and for some reason I turned on the tv in my bedroom. I always listened to the radio while I got ready - always. It was a little before 9, so the first plane had already hit and there was still confusion as to what was really happening. I sat down on my bed to watch just in time to see the second plane hit on live television. I flipped thru several channels because I thought "this cant be real." I called work and told them I was running late because I was watching the news. As I drove to work I listened to news radio and when I got to work almost everyone was in the breakroom watching the tv. We ended up closing around 4 o clock because no one was in the store or the mall. There was very little traffic on the way home. Once there, my roommate and I just watched the news the rest of the evening.

Challenger - Standing outside at work watching it

Diana - Don't remember. I don't understand the fascination with the whole 'royalty' thing, sorry.

9/11 - At my desk at work when a Lebanese co-worker walked in and said "The Moslems have attacked America". This was as the first plane hit, while everyone thought it was an accident.

Challenger: I was in elementary school watching it on TV. I can still remember seeing the space shuttle go up in flames.

Princess Di I was actually at home with my husband when it was announced.

911: I did not know anything at all about it because I was shopping at Walmart. The cashier told me about it and I turned on the radio when I got in my car.

Another major event that I remember was when Katrina hit. I was in a motel in Georgia keeping a very close eye on the storm. All of my husband's family (us included) had to evacuate on Saturday because my mother in law passed away on Thursday before the storm hit. We luckily were able to bury her about a month later.

What about when Reagan was shot? Anyone remember that?

I remember it, but I don't rememeber what I was doing.

Just wondering.....why is it that people only seem to remember where they were when bad things happen?
How about:

The first moonwalk (for those of us old enough to remember)

The U.S. beating the Soviet Union in hockey

The first time the Space Shuttle ever went up

The Berlin Wall coming down

My short-term memory is shot. I can't remember all that recent stuff.

Where were you when:

Sputnik was put in orbit.

Richie Havens opened the Woodstock Music Festival (the original one)

Jimi Hendrix closed the Woodstock Music Festival (the original one)

Bob Dylan switched to electric

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge (Galloping Gertie) collapsed

I might have been a *twinkle* in my Daddy's eye......:05:

I was around for all but the last one of those.
