I bought my XP Home Edition before 2006 but its still letting me make the purchase of Windows Vista upgrade. Will I have trouble installing it?
 
This is like one of those credit card offers "You've been pre-approved!" then you read the fine print and it basically states that nobody is that special and will have to go thru all their normal screening to qualify.

Microsoft set out this lure but they don't have to honor it if you don't qualify according to THEIR standards. They will call you if there are any problems.

I bought my Professional Edition XP back in 2005 and they still took my credit card number and all for the Vista upgrage but since the offer is good for 10/06 to 02/07 purchases, I expect it will be denied.

I'll cross my fingers for us all...
 
Enclose as your proofs of purchase:

The ORIGINAL product box top with the product name and barcode clearly identified from the product, and a copy of your sales receipt that clearly shows the date and store name where you acquired your product. Products must be purchased between October 26, 2006 and February 28, 2007. Mail must be postmarked by March 31, 2007.

So you could buy it now & get Vista for free. You probably only get the Basic version, right?

It states the offers are available from around those dates...not that it had to be purchased between that time.


Can anyone confirm that?

Also, once you upgrade to Vista, the XP key is invalidated meaning you'll never be able to use it. Not even on another computer... So this Free vista upgrade is now looking more this:

XP Home: $178.99
Free Upgrade: $9.99
------------------------------------
Total Price for Free upgrade: $188.98
 
I did this deal after OM had a $70 dollar rebate on XP Home earlier this year.

For less than $35 for Vista (and XP) I will play around with it and wait for the first service pack to come out. I was told by MS that it is back ordered but I am in the que...

If you are installing Vista over an existing XP installation then maybe it invalidates the XP disk for all future installs. Not sure. I haven't done this and I do not intend to try it.

I will (did) purchase a new hard drive and will do a fresh install of Vista on it using the directions in the article above.

I have purchased and installed 3 XP upgrade versions in exactly this same manner without ever having a problem.

I do not own a "full" version of XP.

Thanks for the info on installing the upgrade. I got mine in the mail a couple of days ago.
