Free - Windows XP 64 Bit Trial Edition

If you own AMD Athlon 64 or Opteron based systems, Microsoft will allow you to either download or order on CD a 120-day trial of Windows XP 64-Bit Edition. This will not work with Itanium or x386 (normal) systems, so don't try! Enjoy.

What are you trying to say Mr. Spoofee? Of course it has to be 64-bit, this is the operating system specifically designed to support the new 64-bit architecture.

The other specs are just typical...

Free 1-Year Trial of Windows XP 64-BIT!

This is a cool deal. If any of you own AMD Athlon 64 or Opteron based systems, Microsoft will allow you to either download or order on CD a 360-day trial of Windows XP 64-Bit Edition. This will not work with Itanium or x386 (normal) systems, so don't try! Enjoy.

I got my friend who has a XP 64 3200+ to download this, just waiting to find out what he thinks!
This should definitly make it to the main page! :claps: :claps:

Just so you know you do not need that processor to download the software.

I just want to pick it up for later use. I am downloading it right now, but I do not have a 64 bit processor.

I figured I will just pick it up anyway for when I get a 64 bit processor.

Do not try to install if you have downloaded it and do not have a 64 bit processor. The download is in .ISO format which is easy to burn to CD.

Don't you have to have 64-bit drivers to go along with the OS? Might be hard to find those right now....

I can't wait for 64 bit architecture...it will have 64 bit color, right?

it works.. but its just a trial version... totally useless bc it times out after a while... maybe someone else has a use for it, but i sure dont.
It might time out, but it's a 1 year (360 day) trial. That's not to shabby.

64 bit processor, 64 bit OS, but what about the 64 bit APPS!?

I ran the previous build for a few weeks but decided to drop back after I had driver issues. If you want them though, I should be able to put up a list of the 64bit drivers that I've found in the past. Yes it expires, so do the norton deals that you spend $40 and get a $40 rebate for. Norton expires after a year to. Atleast this is free from the start :)

has anyone been able to download this and actually have it boot up?

if so please help.

Good question! I have not seen anything yet let me know if you do find something

I ordered the CD over a month ago (free +$5 shipping) but have yet to get it. Anyone who orders or downloads the 64 bit version of XP is supposed to be elegable for a discount when its actually released.

i have LONGHORN and tried installing it on my emachines m6811 which is a mobile 64bit processor BUT THE DAMN THING just WONT install.
MY cd drive does not even pick it up as a boot device. But when i install my XP PRO cd it picks it up. SO i am wondering if this download will be useful or just a waste of HD space and TIME

The 64-bit time bomb

Just a reminder to anyone who may want to download this so they can run it in the future on a machine that they do not have yet. Microsoft often puts in a "double bomb" on Release Candidate software (yes this is RC2). The first time bomb will go off after 360 days in this case and the second (in case you install it late) will keep your computer from being much beyond a door stop after say April 30, 2006.

They have been doing this for a while with RC software because typically by the time it reaches RC stage, it is almost ready for prime-time.

-- Another note, if you think M$ is going to give you a discount for "testing" out their software, you are sadly mistaken. :banghead:
They look at people who are not part of a technical beta as people who cannot wait to get their hands on new technology and those people will surely run out and buy the new software when it is availlable. The only people who get any sort of discount are those that Microsoft seeks out to test their software in the early beta and even alpha stages.

-- Yet another note, if you have the longhorn version -- probably the pirated build 4053 -- it is not a bootable CD, but the instructions that came with the legitamate copy tells you what you need to do to get it installed. :banghead:

Typically I am a very optimistic person :D

b00t!

I have installed this on a system I built with an AMD64 3000+.
I Booted fine, I ran it for a few days, but it had some bugs so I went back to my 32 bit version. (like THAT is bug free :banghead: ) Also as Dargon had said previously, there can be driver issues. I am just waiting for my free 64 bit copy of FarCry to load it back up on one of my utility drives again! :D

Remember ppl, the 360 day trial doesn't always mean 360 days.. M$ puts timebombs in beta software to expire at a certain date as well.. So unless your gonna use it now, don't bother downloading it. Now, if your proficient enough in a certain area, you can crack the timebomb code.. I should also point out that only the OS will use the 64bit flag on the processor.. You must use 64bit apps as well.. It's the same as using a Dual Processor system, only programs written to take avantage of dual cpu's will benefit directly.
