I got two postcards from TiVo yesterday. They read...

Dear Consumer:
Thank you for participating in this promotion.
Unfortunately we could not honor your request
due to the following reason(s):
TiVo DVR - Missing Copy or Original UPC

Those postcards were supposed to be checks for $100 each! Needless to say, I got myself a little worked up about it. I knew I had submitted the original UPCs. I had copies of everything. I put it all together in my bag for work and started thinking through what I was going to say when I called them (if I could get through to anyone). I can't say I lost any sleep over it last night, but it was on my mind up until bed time.

This morning when I got to work, I gathered my ammunition and made the call. The automated system was a bit annoying, but I eventually got through to a live operator. It only took about 3 minutes. She looked up my rebates and asked the obvious question; did I submit the original or a copy of the UPCs? I of course answered, "Yes." To my astonishment, she simply replied, "Ok, I have updated your record. You will receive your checks based on the terms of the rebate. They will be in the form of postcards. Can I help you with anything else?"

:hmm:

Does this seem odd to anyone else? Why did she take my word for it? Is it because she knows the system automatically rejects rebates at random in an attempt to keep the lazy man's money? (pure speculation) Whatever the case, I should receive my $200 worth of rebate checks in 6-8 more weeks, or something along those lines, so I can't complain too much.

good for you , alot of ppl dont bother with rebates , or screw it up or are to busy or timid to call

Nope, usually they're nice about it because they know they lose half of them.

I photocopy everything and staple it neatly and place it in my "rebates" folder with the date I mailed it and the date I get the e-mail that they received my submission.

If I don't get an e-mail or anything within a reasonable amount of time, I call in and make sure they have a record. Usually, they say they don't and I fax in all my information to some 800 number and it normally speeds up the process.

It's pretty much all organization, but glad to hear you got your problem fixed.

I've done the same thing with a few officemax rebates. Call them and they take care of it over the phone. Actually got 2(maybe 3 don't exactly remember now) $50.00 rebates on a palm zire that i purchased on sale with coupon for about $180. reg retail price of $250.00. So i either paid $30 or $80, either way i'm happy. :D :D :D

I finally got those two $100 checks a few weeks ago. They were actual checks instead of postcards, not that I care one way or another!

But I also received another reject letter last week. This one was from Circuit City about a $20 ATI x800 Pro rebate I did through them. They claimed I didn't send the receipt or confirmation e-mail, which I had. So once again I was gearing up for a fight, but when I called them they looked up my order online and verified it that way. So once again, a rebate was rejected falsely and a simple phone call cleared it up!

I've had nothing but problems and nightmeres from Parago (rebateshq.com) lately. I'm trying to get two Seagate rebates processed by Parago and they say they're valid but it's been 12 weeks now with no response. I could go into the long story but it's not worth it. I have another rebate in to them for the Belkin G router free at Staples a couple weeks ago so we'll see how that goes.

Funny you mentioned nightmares, Erik. I have literally had a nightmare involving Parago. Seriously. I've spent so much time and effort over them, I distinctly remember a dream where I had nothing to do other than be on the damn phone with them.

Long story short: Sony Cybershot $50 rebate, submitted everything, got a postcard saying item was not purchased within correct dates even though I did.

Sony's customer support told me to resend everything in, so I circled the date on the receipt copy and sent it in. Postcard comes in the mail claiming I didn't enclose receipt... I did! :banghead:

Sony's customer support told me to contact Parago directly, and the only way to do it was through email. They start of telling me how I'm such a valued KINGSTON customer.. Wait, this is a SONY rebate! :banghead:

Eventually, I threatened to go to the BBB and file a complaint... lo-and-behold, they reply telling me that my SONY rebate is suddenly valid, and that it would arrive as a postcard and not as a check (same message as you). 8-12 weeks, they said.

All this happened in April of 2004. Obviously, I didn't get the check.

Around November, I started poking around Sony and Parago, wondering why I still hadn't gotten my check. Since then, I have spent HOURS on the phone with Sony customer support, and they have no idea where to send me. They tell me how they'll ask their supervisor to call me the next day (yeah, right). They tell me how they're transferring me to the rebate department and transfer me right back to the phone number I called to reach them. At this point, I've all but given up. If I had gotten a job at McDonalds and worked there for the time I spent on the phone with them, I would've had way more than $50 already.

Any magic phone numbers I can call to get the rebate to go through? What number did you call, Sonan?

Yeah, it seems like Parago only sends you your checks when you're really going to complain about them.

It's funny, I submitted the two for Seagate and 12 weeks or so later I was given the runaround that they were going to process an expedite request and I would hear either by e-mail or phone within a week. Three weeks later with no response, I call and they say that no one was supposed to contact me and I should call on the 29th of December which would've been a month from the time I called before. I got very angry with the woman and hung up. I never did call back but magically both showed up at the same time in my mailbox one day.

Sigh...

Just hearing these stories makes me want to do something about it if I had more time.

I'd probably make a Web form that asks for the name of the person submitting the rebate, where they submitted it to, etc. and then when they click the 'Next' or 'Submit' button it would automatically generate a PDF of a complaint addressed to their local BBB and attorney general (AG) office. All the person would have to do is print and mail. You know how quick some of these things could get resolved?!

If I get more time, I'll e-mail Spoofee with more details fleshed out. I think it would be great for Spoofee to have this exclusively on his site!

Quick update on this...

I got my $50 check :D I casually mentioned my dilemma to my mom the other day, and she got right on it. She talked to 8 different people, got to the right department, got to the manager, faxed over copies, and got everything straightened out. In fact, they even sent me an extra 128mb memory stick for my camera as an apology and said that they dumped Parago for another company.

@spazntwitch: that's a REALLY good idea... you should!

Yeah, I think I have a Belkin $20 rebate being processed by Parago, so if it doesn't come in a month or so I'll do the same exact thing your mom did.

You can contact rebatehq @ 972-538-7200

Be persistent. Don’t give up. The person that answers will try to make you call somewhere else.

Ramon......Bring this man a rebate that doesn't deserve a robe
WOW..O&A Party Rocks

Bump on this.

RebateHQ phone number is also 877-681-2362. I was denied on a rebate this week and tried calling them and they weren't there.

What I did was contact a manager at my local Staples (from where I purchased the product) and told them the story. They asked me to fax my documentation to them and then they stated they would override RebateHQ's decision. It was a quick, painless process and I didn't have to deal with some unknowledgeable CSR on the phone. Staples wants my business back so they have a stake in getting me my rebate.
