How to Save Airplane Flight Tickets

Here are a few tips in a nutshell to help you save on buying airplane flight tickets.

Use a tool - Google, Kayak, SkyScanner and Skiplagged will compare prices for you

Tuesday / Wednesday 1am - is the time that tickets are cheapest. If you cannot nail these times, flights are known to be generally cheaper in the hours regular people are sleeping

Use Incognito Mode - Use incognito or clear your cookies. Some flight sites purposely raise their price each time you visit them.

July is expensive - if you have the option, travel in August

Choose the first flight out - you may need to wake up early, but this should give you a lesser chance of the flight being delayed from previous flights

Book as an individual - If you book as a group, the flight will try to charge you the higher price to everyone in the group

Save with GiftCards - Go to CardBear and get airline gift cards to save another 5% off

Set an alarm to checkin - for 24 hours before the flight. Some airlines like Southwest will give you a better seat for doing this

Choose a Seat - Some flights allow you to pick a seat, see seatguru or seatexpert to see which seats are the best for your plane

Just get a job with an airline company. You and your family can fly for free!

Prices are generally lowest about 6-8 weeks in advance.

Gift Cards aren't a very good idea if your credit card provides even basic travel insurance. Even if you face an issue one in twenty times, it still pays off..

Momondo has often better prices than kayak for some reason. I compared same flights on both websites.

'Kayak, SkyScanner and Kayak will compare prices for you'

Is it me, or were there too many kayaks in that sentence?

@emma johnson - I like your suggestion about booking on Tues/Wed 1:00 AM in the morning but when I thought about it for a second. It does not really make sense because 1AM for someone from the eastcoast is only 10 PM on the west coast. Just confusing info!

Use skiplagged.com for great prices on flights - An airline and their agent (United & Orbitz) aren't happy about it and have filed a lawsuit, but how can it be illegal to purchase tickets from available flights just because they are the cheapest.

I get mine from the airline website, they often have a better listing of flights.

If you are flying Frontier, first google search 'frontier promo code'. They often have codes that get you 10% or more off. Currently have 'GETBEER' code good until 10/13/14

Or, use kayak, orbitz... to compare prices as one way. round trip is no longer cheaper, they just combined two individual prices together. Once you located the inbound and outbound flight prices, go to the airline site(s) directly and book the flights. This is to avoid charges from orbitz...(kayat I think is free), and you have 24 hours to cancel without fee. Some airlines do not participate in kayat, orbitz, need to check the price directly from those airlines web sites.

Southwest will probably assign you a earlier boarding group

1am when? Which time zone?

Southwest has free seating, but they let people board in the same order that they checked in.

How does Southwest give me a better seat when they don't even assign seats?
