U.S. Treasury Series I Savings Bonds 5.51% Interest Rate
US Treasury is offering a 5.51% annualized interest rate for the first 6 months on new Series I Savings Bonds purchased from November 2026 through April 2027.

You can purchase up to $10,000 per person per calendar year through TreasuryDirect.

How to Get This Deal

  1. Visit TreasuryDirect.gov
  2. Create a free account or sign in to your existing account
  3. Link your bank account if you haven't already
  4. Select BuyDirect and choose Series I Savings Bonds
  5. Enter the amount you want to purchase (minimum $25)
  6. Review and submit your purchase

How Does the 5.51% Interest Work?

  • 1.40% fixed rate: Stays the same for the life of the bond
  • 4.08% inflation rate: Adjusts every 6 months
  • 5.51% combined rate: Applies to your first 6 months, then adjusts based on inflation
For example, a $10,000 investment would earn approximately $275 in interest during the first 6 months.

Important Things to Know

  • 12-month lockup: You cannot cash out during the first year.
  • Early withdrawal penalty: Cashing out before 5 years means losing the last 3 months of interest.
  • Purchase limit: $10,000 per person per calendar year for electronic I Bonds.
  • Interest: Compounds every 6 months and can continue earning for up to 30 years.
  • Taxes: Interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local income taxes.
  • Note: The 5.51% rate is not guaranteed beyond the first 6 months. Future rates depend on inflation.

Keep in mind
* If you cash an I bond before it is five years old, you will lose the last three months of interest

Also the "inflation-rate" portion can drop. Very unlikely, but who knows what's going to happen.

The "fixed rate" portion of 1.4% is the highest it's been since 2006
